Size of tray icons (XP Pro SP1)

    Hi all,

All of a sudden the icon in my system tray (also in other places like IE's favourites, the start menu etc) have grown bigger. I'm sure there's an option somewhere to change the size of them, but I can't find it. Any ideas?

PS I've tried Desktop Settings>Appearance>Advanced>Icons/Active Title Bar/Inactive Title Bar, none of those change them..

You haven't changed your screen resolution or DPI setting in your Display Properties?

    Mark ~

If you haven't adjusted your resolution as Leif inquired, then try this:

'Desktop Settings'>'Appearance'>'Effects' button and clear the box that says 'Use large icons'.

Re: Size of tray icons (XP Pro SP1)

    Thanks for the ideas folks,

Bruce, the large icons box was not checked, but I toggled it on and off anyway to see if it helped, and it didn't.. It changed the desktop icons, but not the tray icons..

Leif, I've not changed the DPI, it's at the default of 96, and my resolution hasn't changed, I use 1152x864. I tried pushing it up to 1280x1024, that's a bit too small for me to use comfortably, but the tray icons looked like the size they used to be in 1152x864... When I changed back they returned to the larger size.

    Cowboy, I'll be sure you're first in line for my mass e-mail campaign when I start selling them <img src=/S/wink.gif border=0 alt=wink width=15 height=15>

Mark, Here's a registry file I found on the MS XP general newsgroup and the quote from Helly Theriot the author. Kelly is an MS-MVP who is very good and helpful in those newsgroups.
"Check your settings against the ones listed in the attached.reg file
(except for MinWidth). It can be read in Notepad."

NOTE: I changed the extension to txt so I could attach it but the contents have not changed.

Wahey, that fixed it! The only ones which were different to my settings were the CaptionWidth which I had at 330 rather than 275, and IconSpacingFactor, which did not exist. After changing those two and rebooting the icons have returned to the smaller size!!

    Thanks joe, you're a star <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
