user profile (xp home)

I was in system properties and came across this odd (I think) user in my profile. (the first one listed as unknown). Is this normal? It was as you can see created yesterday 1/15/2003. I am the only user. Would appreciate any insight into this. I know diddly about user profiles. I have att. a screen shot for you.
Thanks ever so

Re: user profile (xp home)

Correction, it was modified (or used) yesterday. That doesn't tell you when it was created. I would run Windows Explorer, open Documents and Settings and click on that user name. In the right pane, the dates might give you a clue as to when it was actually created. If you're the ONLY user, it must have gotten created by something you downloaded or some surfing you did. I guess I would open Control Panel, Users and DELETE the user account if you're certain nobody else uses the computer but you. Do you have any spyware and/or antivirus software installed? Come back and talk some more.....

Re: user profile (xp home)

Hi - thanks for replying.
firstly, yes I have a antivirus - AVG - and just to be on the safe side, I just went to trend and scanned and came up clean. As far as spyware program, I have Adaware. I know, I know its terribly outdated but spybot sounds awfully confusing to me. As far as documents and settings goes, there was no user name for "unKnown" and I think i was looking in the correct place. I can send you a screen shot if you want me to show where I am looking.
Went into control panel, users and att. is a screen shot of what is there. Just me, myself and I by the looks of it ..Says guest account is off as you can see (sorry its not clearer). I am not sure exactly what I am looking for in the doc. & settings. In there I have 4 folders: all users, owner, default user, & Vickie & Don...thats all ..
Am I in the right area??
Anyway, I can't think of what else to tell you. Also its late and my brain is shutting down. . As I said above, this area is all greek to me. So you will probably have to explain it like your talking to a ten year old. <g>. (I wish) . I Like XP, but some of it is weird. But then again so was 98. Just a matter of getting used to it I suppose.
thanks.

Would make sense, seeing as us "homies" aren't supposed to know about that admin account. There's an identical Account Unknown on my XP Home, with the exception that it's 5.85mb, instead of 899kb like Victoria's.

(Edited by bigaldoc on 17-Jan-03 05:51. )
Victoria, I think Bruce and Tim are on to something here! Not sure if you're familiar with what they mean by the built-in administrator account. When XP is initially installed, it automatically creates an account with "administrator privileges" and sometimes users don't bother (or know) to give that account a name. Maybe that's what happened here. Look at my attachment which is really TWO screenshots I put together. The left side is a window similar to your first one that shows user accounts on my system. Note the first entry, which I NAMED "Administrator." Do one more screenshot for us if you will. Open up Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management. Click the left pane to expand Local Users and Groups and then click USERS. You should see a screen similar to the right side of my attachments. Post that up here for us. If you need to, check the View command, so we can see all three columns.

{Edited to make the shot a tad smaller!}

Re: user profile (xp home)

Good Morning:
Thanks guys for that insight.
Big Al - you kinda scared the *u know* outa me for a bit there with some of your questions . Thought I had some real nasties happening. (I have just quit smoking and when I thought my computer had been taken over by aliens, guess what I did? yup, lit a cigarette while I was checking things out - my bad).
Ok then, now that it seems (somewhat) a normal thing to have, why is it there? and why does it modify itself? and should I keep it? or is it no big deal and maybe just let it be? . Nuf said for now, bye.

Re: user profile (xp home)

Victoria, you can probably stop 'cause Al may have asked you to do the slightly impossible.

Al, you're running on Pro, right? That "Local Users and Groups" item seems to be just one of the things that MS decided was too complex for XP Home users. Maybe there's something else that might help?

In CMD, NET USER lists the following, in addition to the users I've created: Administrator, Guest, HelpAssistant, and SUPPORT_388945a0. I thought a NET USER with the username would provide more clues, but I can't see a way trace any of the additional info back to that original "Account Unknown". I tried to search the registry for that SUPPORT_388945a0 user, but came up blank.

Aw shoot, Victoria! Tim's right and I apologize. Trying to keep "Pro vs. Home" in mind all the time slays me. Sorry. But let's keep thinking about it. Don't go away..... And THNX for pointing that out, Tim

Re: user profile (xp home)

In your earlier posts, you and Bruce both said you see that unknown account on XP Home installations. But, Tim, when you opened the CMD window and did a NET USER command, you got the list you wrote in the previous post, minus the "unknown" account. Can we conclude, as you and Bruce both surmised, that IT IS the built-in administrator account? Since it's pretty obvious I don't know diddly about the Home version, I don't know if one CAN logon as the built-in administrator or not. But the moral of the story seems to be that Victoria is seeing a "normal" situation, don'tcha think?

Re: user profile (xp home)

I think "normal" seems a reasonable conclusion, and I expect it's not a cause for concern and can left as is. From what I've been able to gather you can logon as Administrator, but only in Safe mode (or recovery console?) and if your vendor happened to let you know the password (mine didn't and disclaims any knowledge of it ).

But, it bugs me that I don't know which of those four extra accounts is "unknown", or whether it is something else again . I can't think of a way to dig any deeper, at least on a Home system, so I guess it'll have to be left

Normal is good then. (now I have no reason to smoke anymore! ) The only question left in my curious feeble brain is why does it modify itself.

Re: user profile (xp home)

Now that's a good question, Victoria! Notice in my screenshot above that THREE of my user accounts have yesterday's date and the only one that was used is the AEH account (me). I think Windows must do some kind of registry updating that impacts "all users" or something like that. That has to be the case, but at the same time, I wonder why my built-in ADMINISTRATOR account doesn't get modified too. Well, I guess we can't know everything. Most importantly, I think, is that you ARE running spyware and antivirus software to keep snakes out of your woodpile!
