system restore (xp home)

I have one more question. In system restore, It was cranked to max. I set it (today) at 1/2 way (2500 mg) I read that this can be set as low as 200mg. If this is ok (200mgs) exactly how many days would this go back to? If this is a question that can be answered. I have 40 gig with 93% free.
Should I just leave it where I have it now?? Also since I just rolled this back today (and I have had XP on here since late November, new computer) what happens to the restore points that were there? Also, do I need to delete the older ones over time? I would assume they would certainly add up over the weeks, months, years . I think I am finished this rambling question . Thanks to whomever for the help.

Double click My Computer : Left click on your C drive : Right Click Properties : Right click Disk Clean Up : Right Click More Options : at bottom of that window under System Restore it says "you can free more disk space by removing all but most recent restore points" Right Click Clean Up : Right Click Yes : And there you go! Also I would leave your restore set at max , you have plenty of disk space. But thats just me. And when your system is running real nice it never hurts to create your own restore point and date it.

FWIW, I've got mine set to 388 MB and that holds 11 restore points. I think on this PC at work that is plenty. Regulate backups are done also. IMHO, 2.5 GB is excessive. You could easily go to 1.0 GB and keep 20 - 30 restore points. That should be enough for most any contingency. Remember, restore points do not take the place of regular backups.

Joe ~

Just curious how you determined how many restore points = x restore points.

Bruce, If you start the restore process when the calendar is shown you can click on each bold date and just count the times. Each is a restore point.

Joe, I'm a dummy - I just noticed my post was incorrect. What I meant was how you determined how many MB = x restore points.
Thanks!

Bruce,
I think I read it in the MS XP general newsgroup. Couldn't swear to that though. Whatever I read gave a general range or two. I'm just extrapolating from my settings.

Bruce,
---------------------
MB = x restore points.
---------------------
This is a variable, depending on what and how much you have on your particular system, What applies to one machine will probably NOT apply to another.

Also, the older restore points will be replaced by newer ones as you accumulate more and more restore points, to the max of how much space you allocate for restore. FIFO.

Okay ~ I have one drive with 396MB assigned for restore and 395MB on another drive. I have 8 restore points for an average of 98.875MB per restore point.

Does this sound about right to you?

Yeah - sounds about right. Depends on the whole setup. You can go to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp and do a search on 'system restore' for a lot more info.
