Default Close (WIN XP 5.1 SP1)

START/TurnOffComputer
It defaults to StandBy

How can I set it to default to Turn Off?

Thank you,

After selecting 'Turn Off Computer' from start menu, you are not getting a box with the options 'Stand By', 'Turn Off', & 'Restart'?

If you turn off using the Welcome Screen in Control Panel, Users, Change the way users logon..... you should get a pick-list screen like the attachment. Mine defaults to whichever choice I used the last time.

On my XP Home system, with the Welcome screen and fast user switching both ON, I get the following selections after "Start/Turn Off Computer". If the Welcome screen is OFF (kills FUS too), then the behaviour is same as for Al.

Re: Default Close (WIN XP 5.1 SP1)

I get the screen that TimOz gets.
I have the mouse set to point to the default button, which in this case is Stand By.
I would like the mouse the point to Turn Off.

OK - so I'm lazy and don't want to have to move my mouse 2 inches....

Thanks for your replies!!

You need to have a little heart-to-heart talk with that smart aleck mouse, Michael

Seriously, I looked through the registry but can't find where Windows is hiding that default. I searched for all three choices and all I can find are tips and such.

You could try pressing the "u" key. Yes - it's another key-press, but your two posts above equate to about 300 Turn-Offs .

Or you could check out JSI Tip #079 - but it may be NT4/W2K only.

Re: Default Close (WIN XP 5.1 SP1)

How to switch between shut down dialogs:

Start | Control Panel | User Accounts | Change te way users log on or off | check or uncheck "Use the Welcome screen".

Keyboard shortcut for Welcome Screen- type shutdown dialog (as Tim Oz's):
Windows key - Up arrow key - Enter - Alt+u - Enter

Keyboard shortcut for NT - type shutdown dialog (as Big Al's):
Windows key - Up arrow key - Enter - Shift+s - Enter
This type of shutdown dialog "remembers" your last choice - you don't need to press Shift+s if already selected.

Unless the Start Menu has an option beginning with the letter 'U', you should be able to start the sequence off with just:
Windows Key > U >
(as attached pic - or is that just a Pro option?)

What about Ctrl_Alt_Del > S
?
(or is that just a Pro option?)

I admire that - sometimes it takes serious effort to save a mouseclick or keypress. If you're truly lazy you could use something like <!post=AutoIt,210502>AutoIt<!/post> to automate the whole shutdown.
