Does an import from an Excel spreadsheet produce favorable results, or should I consider creating a database from scratch?
The spreadsheet contains two name columns (Lname, Fname - Lname, Fname), starting and ending dates, and several account number columns.

It should import cleanly - we often create new tables that way. You may want to establish a primary key for the table by putting an autonumber field on it, and you may need to check and make sure your dates are all valid dates, etc., but that should be about the only problems, and it really beats doing data entry.
