Page Numbers in Footers Inconsistent (2002/SP2)

I have some documents, that when printed, the page numbers in the footers are never consistent. I'm using a setup of Page X of Y (with the Y being "sectionpages"). When I open and print (2 separate documents), one will print correctly and the other prints 1 of 1, 2 of 2, etc. If document is open and I print p1s6-p5s6 it prints correctly and if I print s6 only, it goes back to 1 of 1, 2 of 2, etc.

I did a search yesterday on the MS website and it was suggested to turn off "Update Fields" under the print option, which mine was not selected. Any other ideas? The docs are to be distributed across the US and must work correctly with Word 97/2000/2002.

    Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi Leanne:
I'm not sure, but do you have any graphics in tables in the header/footer? I've read that that can cause a problem, although it usually results in Page 0.

    Hi Phil:

No, I don't have any graphics in footers (no text in headers at all). I do, in the footer, have a border above the first line and a border below the last line (usually a 3-line footer) - but I can't see where that would cause the footers to behave like they are.

    Hi Leanne:
Well, it was only a guess. I'm sure you've compared the field codes in both documents to see if they're the same. You might check the formatting with the button on the header/footer toolbar to see if they are set to be continuous or to restart each section. Other than that, maybe the compatibility options are set differently for the documents. I can't think of anything else. <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>

    Leanne -

Another stab. Sometimes I have seen this happen with documents prepared by (or "standard" templates used by) attorneys who have prepared documents for our company. For some reason, the "footers" they use are really drawing objects pasted into the footer. Otherwise, if I had this problem, I guess I'd bite the bullet and remove all footers and headers( <img src=/S/barf.gif border=0 alt=barf width=64 height=23>), save the file to a new name, trying some page-printing to make sure that all headers and footers are empty, open the new file, re-create the footers and headers - and print.

Sorry that I don't have any simple suggestions,
