Fix corrupt names utility (2000, XP)

    Hi there,

I have just finished a first version of a utility that enables you to find and fix corrupt names in a workbook.

Anyone interested is invited to respond here.

So, it won't allow you to use Capone, Gatti or Bugsy as Named Ranges? Does it come with a semi-automatic to fix them? <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
What does it do? How do we get it?

Sometimes an Excel workbook can contain names that contain illegal characters. The exact cause of this is not known, but chances are that names like that stem from importing lotus123 files.

Names like that often cannot be edited or deleted through the Insert, name define box and can also not be changed using VBA.
I've included a sample file with an illegal name.

This utiltiy enables the removal of these illegal names.

Ah, not the Mafioso, the Lotioso! It sounds good, but my problem is corrupt programmers who over-use Named Ranges. Guess I'll have to stay <img src=/S/cranky.gif border=0 alt=cranky width=18 height=25>
SO, if one cannot do it manually and one cannot do it with VBA, how do you do it?

    Whitchcraft, of course. <g>

I use VBA and export the offending book to HTML, then do my trickery and presto! names fixed.

Re: Fix corrupt names utility (2000, XP)

    Hi Jan,
Just found this post while doing a search for Excel + DocsOpen. We have a sporadic problem (with several users it's a constant!) where they will open an Excel file number with say the number 543210, but the displayed name may be 543J0! or something similar. As you probably know, Excel is a passive integration with Hummingbird DocsOpen. If your utility is able to help I would love to hear about it. TIA

Exactly what name is displayed wrong? The file name or a defined name in the workbook?

How are these filenames/defined names generated?

Re: Fix corrupt names utility (2000, XP)

It is the file name that is displayed incorrectly. The file name (i.e. number) is generated by Hummingbird PC Docs. It will assign the correct number, say 543210, but upon launching Excel whether from within DocsOpen or Start, Programs, the number displayed is a 'bogus' file name. Thanks for the reply.

In that case the utility will be of no help at all.

I don't know Hummingbird PC Docs, so advising on that is impossible for me, I'm sorry.
