File Shredders

There seems to be a large amount of traffic/conversation on the net about secure file wipers/deleters. I have read reviews on several and the opinions seem to be mixed at best. I am wondering if any Loungers have preferences or recommendations for a context capable file shredder.

Hi, Michael.

I'm not sure what "Context Capable" means. If I get you right, PGP has a right-click file shred feature. Spybot Search & Destroy also features file shreddding. I haven't used these much myself, so I cannot recommend any.

Norton Systemworks also has a file shredder (wipe info) built into Norton Utilities. Easy to use, just drag and drop any files into it and tel it to shred.

Hi Viking, so it is, Speed Disk in Utilities. I have only recently loaded NSWorks 2002, had no idea that feature was included, very cool. Thanks for letting me know where to find something I already had!

Re: File Shredders

Actually, Windows 2000 comes with it's own file shredder. Not as easy as a click, but a lot more educational!

From your Windows 2000 CD, install the support tools. (Don't remember what folder their in, probably support, the help files should tell you.)

One of the tools that is added is DiskProbe. It will let you read and write to your harddrive BIT BY BIT. If that doesn't let you 'shred' your files, I don't know what will.

On a side not, I goofed a partition once, and I found a nifty utility called Restore2000 Pro, which will 'scan' an NT partition for ANY file(s)/folder(s). It doesn't even have to be a partition, it could be a partitionless drive, the files just have to be saved in NTFS format.

If you're still looking I've a little file called Eraser and it works fine in the context menu. It also has command line switches if you want to schedule it. I think I got it from here

Re: File Shredders

I'm obviously doing something wrong with my links. Perhaps someone can tell me what.
Thanks.

Michael

You're welcome. Note how you can also Erase from the Recycle Bin which I didn't spot at first.
