Graphics Association - Word2K

Hi Everyone:

I'm curious as to what applications you recommend as the default for associations with graphics (or if you use more than one). Currently, I have:

bmp Paint
gif MS Photo Editor
jpg MS Photo Editor
png MS Photo Editor
wmf nothing
emf nothing

I don't have any special graphics programs installed, although I'm thinking of installing Adobe Photoshop. And I recall that a few have Irfnview, but I don't recall whether that's a good utility to use as a default for associations.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Phil:

I use IrFan View as the default for ALL graphics types. If I need to do something special with a specific graphics application, then I open the application first then File|Open the graphic from the application.

I use a program called ThumbsPlus, you can get it at www.tucows.com. It will read these files and then some.

Hi Phil,

I have a few graphics programs installed so what I have done is to add them as shortcuts to my "Send to" folder.

That way I can easily pick the appropriate program for my needs at that time.

Phil,

I've had trouble with MS Phot editor, I've had numerous occasions when I click on a file associated with MSPE, and it hangs.

I've changed the associations now, and have not had the particular problem.

Hi Phil,
I don't know if it's me or BG, but MSPE hangs, freezes or simply doesn't do what's needed. Sorry I'm just criticizing (versus offering a solution), but I'm also looking for something else.
Hope to learn more by following the thread.

I use what I think is called ACD Viewer as a default graphics browser - I'd check but my home system is is down at the moment - from a company called ACD Labs??? I got it off cover disc a couple of years ago and think its pretty good. I've put Irfan on the works machine and initial comments are that it's not quite as good as the ACD Viewer but I'll continue to play with it and see how I go in the long term. The main point with Irfan seems to be the browsing isn't quite as fluid as with ACD. As for file types though, I rarely get more complicated than jpg so can't comment on it's ability there. And another point, it's not freeware unlike Irfan.

Thanks, Brooke.
I'm playing with IrFan since yesterday and am not completely satisfied. I'm particularly irritated by the fact that each time I use the zooming in or zooming out tool the window (even if maximized) reduces itself to a quarter of the screen and jumps to the top-left position.
They offer an ACD SpecViewer as Freeware at acdlabs, but I have the impression it's very specific software (more for chemistry & medical stuff, NMR etc.) Same thing at their ordering site. You must have gotten a unique offer or something they retired.
Thanks again,
OanaK

I'm sure it was available for some time on cover disc in the uk. I would have a look to check that it is acd, but I've got a few problems with the home system. However, I'll see whether I've still got the disc - if I have there should be more info on that.

Sorry about that - I found the cover disc. What I'm using is called ACDSee from http://www.acdsystems.com - the version I use is not what's on offer there now, but, based on my experience with whatever version is on my home system, I would recommend taking the free trial and seeing what you think . The file size is a little larger than I expected though - i might try upgrading, but I'll do the download whilst I'm at work.

Hi Everyone:

Thanks for all the feedback. I'm going to give IrFan View a try.

Hi Oana:
You can fix your problem by changing the IrFan View View settings from "View|Fit Window to Image" to "View|Fit Image to Window", or my preference, "View|Fit only big Images to Window"
