Repair corrupt Excel names (2000, XP)

Hi All,

I just published my utility to repair workbooks with corrupt names in them:

http://forums.compuserve.com/scripts/flisa...&FVF=1/.zip

Description:

"A long time unsolved problem has been tackled by this utility.

Sometimes an Excel file may contain defined names (Insert, Name) that cannot be removed using normal methods, be it through the user interface and/or using VBA. These names may stem from importing Lotus files and/or from file corruption.
This utility wil enable you to repair a workbook containing these names so they can be edited (and deleted) again. Some workbook formatting will be lost, as shown in the manual of this utility."

Excel 97 SR2 (Dutch):

If I select Tools/Options..., and check and immediately uncheck the R1C1 box, and then click OK, nothing happens.

If I select Tools/Options..., check the R1C1 box and then click OK, I am prompted to replace two names: __123GraphAPIE MEM and a name consisting of 2 boxes. No complaints about sheet names.

Thanks Hans,

Forgot to include you need to OK in between.

So I guess this works in XL97 too!

Re: Repair corrupt Excel names (2000, XP)

Hi all,

The utility mentioned above just seems to have become obsolete.

I found an extremely simple way to repair corrupt names without ever loosing any formatting or any other feature!!!

- Tools, options, General, check R1C1 reference style
*****EDITED By JKP to Add:******
- Press OK
- Tools, options, General, uncheck R1C1 reference style

You will be prompted for legal names for all open workbooks!!!

Anyone willing to test this on the attached workbook please?

Please include your XL version and SR and language with your comments!
