    Win2K System file missing

During boot-up, my Dell computer reports that it can't find "c:winntsystem32configsystem" and stops cold. It will not even boot in safe mode (same message). I have the recovery disc that came with the computer, but am hesitant to use it at this point. Is there any way to recover this missing file?

'System' is part of your registry. If it is not found you're in big trouble. Do you have a backup such as one created by Drive Image or Ghost? If so, you should have boot disks that you could use to try to restore that file from your last backup. I don't think the recovery (I take that to be the 'resource' disk) disk from Dell (or any other OEM) will let you boot into recovery mode. So, unless you have a backup I think you're in for a restore.

Thanks for helping. I was afraid that would be the response I would get. I was just hoping that I would not have to reload everything. Oh well...maybe it was time for a clean restart.
