Windows XP Standby (SP1)

I have a HP 750n machine with the OEM version of WinXP.
Recently, when I want to go to Standby or Hibernate, WinXP will start (showing the phrase "preparing to standby") but when it gets to the point where the machine will actually shut down the CPU fan, the hard drives, etc, it suddenly reboots. I can't relate this to any point in time or installation of anything else. I have tried both a previous Restore Point and a Reinstall of WinXP (from the OEM hidden partition) but nothing seems to work.

Can't help, except to let you know you're not alone. I get the same a couple of times a week. Too infrequent to have a spotted a pattern yet. But, the system does do as it's told on the second attempt (so far ).

Some machines will NOT support "Standby or Hibernate" and/or other attached devices are not supported. Turn off "Standby or Hibernate". I do NOT use them and do not have any problems. This has been known since "Standby or Hibernate" first came out in Win 2000 amd Me, were NOT designed to work on ALL machines and devices.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Ahh! Thanks Dave . That probably also explains why my printer occasionally doesn't. It's a pain when features like this almost work and lead you to doubt what you're doing. I much prefer spectacular crash & burn failures, although it cuts down on opportunities to exercise the little grey cells.

Dave,
Thanks for your reply. I wouldn't even have worried about the problem if it hadn't worked satisfactorily on my machine for about six months.
