The Invisible Administrator Account (XP 5.1 (SP-1))

In order to setup a home network, I changed from my laptop XP system from client/server (used at my former employer) to peer-to-peer networking. Once the change completed, I ran the Network Setup wizard to join the already-running MSHOME network. That worked fine.

But something strange has happened to the administrator account - it's there but the Welcome-style logon and User Accounts management don't know about it. The Welcome logon and User Accounts management show only two accounts - my personal account and the Guest account. However, when I disable the Welcome-style logon and use Ctrl-Alt-Delete logon, I can log into the administrator account. Also, if I attempt to create a new account named "administrator," XP (naturally) tells me that an account with that name already exists.

So, my question is, how do I get the administrator account to show up in the User Accounts management and Welcome logon windows?

    Thanks
    Al

Download and install TweakUI for Windows XP. If you're using the Welcome Screen, TweakUI will let you "turn on" the Administrator account.

    Al,

I just happened upon this thread and out of curiosity I looked in TweakUI for that option to turn on/display the Administrator Account on the Welcome Screen. I can't seem to find it in the "Login" section. Welcome Screen is enabled. Perhaps this is only applicable to XP Pro? I'm using the Home version.

    Thanks,

    Jeff

I don't have any experience with HOME version, Jeff, but I think you're right. I think I saw DaveA or someone in The Lounge say that you CAN'T turn it on in the Welcome Screen of the Home version. You ought to search the Lounge and see what you find.

Al you are correct, the ONLY way to get the the Admin account in the Home version is to boot into the Safe Mode and then the Admin password is required. Remember by default the password is is the "Enter key".

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
