HotSync Problem

I have a user who, when he initiates a hotsync, gets a message on his computer screen to select a user. Only his name is listed, which he selects and clicks OK. But the message keeps popping back up and he never gets through the sync.
Some history: his palm ran completely out of charge. When I put it in a charging unit, the hard reset message appeared (the "all data will be erased" message). I answered "no" to the message to prevent what looked like the start of a hard reset. However, all data was gone anyway once the unit was recharged.

What's going on?

Try synching the unit, export the address book, calendar, etc and hard reset the palm. Then re-sych it, it should ask once about the user name and shouldn't after that.

Re: HotSync Problem

I had the same problem with one of my users. Come to find out the name he setup on his original computer (the one with the hotsynch cradle) had a different name than the one he had here at work. Basically, his Palm, and orginal PC, were setup as "John Doe" but his work PC was setup as John P. Doe. I uninstalled and reinstalled the software on his work PC (redundant but seemed cleaner at the time) and made sure his name was consistant. I was then able to do the Hotsynch without any issues.

Good luck,

Yeah, you're right. However, this user is in another location so it'll be a big headache doing a reinstall. Can I fix the user name on the Palm itself? I looked for this info on my palm, but couldn't find it.

I hesitate to say no but I think that the Palm gets its configuration from the PC it synchs to originally. You can check out http://www.palm.com/support/index.html
They may have more information for you. Any chance of walking the user through the reinstall?

Re: HotSync Problem

If the user can rebuild the information, try deleting from the C:Palm folder (or similar) the sub-folder that matches the user (ie: for me it is BaldreC), and hard reset the palm. This is a trick 3Com has passed on to me a few times.

Re: HotSync Problem

I just chatted with Palm, and they did tell me about the hard reset (which will be easier to walk the user through than the install...i hope ). I was not told about deleting the user folder...hmmmmm. I guess we'll will try that if the reset alone doesn't work.

Thanks everyone for all your great advice!

Yep. The hard reset worked. And since all his data was wiped out when the charge was lost, no (further) harm was done.
