Personal Distribution List weirdness (Outlook XP)

So I got a call from a user (I think all my posts start like this) ...and he's working with a Personal Distribution List (PDL). When he adds the members, they are added in alphabetical order by last name, which is how it should be in his opinion. BUT ...when he addresses an email to that PDL and sends, then goes into his Sent Items and looks at the email, he notices that the last name on the list, alphabetically, is the first person to show up in the To: field. Then the rest of the names are in the correct alpha order. I thought he was crazy, so I repeated the process: created a list, noticed the alpha order by last name, sent an email to the list, checked out the Sent email ...and ...he's right. It DOES put the last name on the list FIRST in the To: field. Does anyone have any reason WHY this happens (the dreaded question in the IT field, I know).

Actually the real question is WHY does he care...but he does...and it's my job to fix it if it's fixable.

How 'bout that! MS does work in mysterious ways. I think I'd make him a DL on the server. Those don't expand, so he won't be bugged by it...

Only problem is that they are his personal Contacts, not really anything fit for Global distribution. And....I'm not sure I know how to make a DL on the server using Contact stored in his personal mailbox. If there's a way, please fill me in.

On 2d thought the GAL DL may not be such a hot idea. It would be visible to others and you'd have to first create the (external) accounts.

I did a quick search and didn't see any mention of this PDL behavior. I'll try and check technet and msdn later; could be something there...

    Satira

I ran some tests too - and yes, its definitely a behaviour.

While that is extremely interesting, it is not disfunctional because the send works perfectly fine. It occurs to me that while your user may want a cure an explanation may be enough.

    Sooooo - lets create one <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> Here's one attempt

"Personal distribution lists are an additional feature of Outlook that were provided due to popular demand for personal addresses that were not part of Corporate lists. The design and implementation has been short of functionality in several areas (such as the ability to select and copy members, exclude members, or not send to self). The behaviour of the last name coming to the front is another example of inconsistency. We have made a bug report to Microsoft but have tested the send process and confirm that this does not affect the integrity of the send."
