    .plugin141.trace (2002)

All of a sudden when I open Excel it opens to a worksheet that is headed JAVA(tm) Plug-in: version 1.4.1; What is this? Is it something to be concerned about?

Sounds like this file has crept into your XLSTART directory. Excel will open all files from there. Move the file.
Also in Tools, options, general there is an entry called Alternate startup file location. All files from a directory specified in there will be opened as well.

Excel will automatically open all files in the xlstart folder (and in the alternate startup folder if you have set one in Tools/Options..., General tab). Search for the xlstart folder and move or delete any file in there that you don't trust. Note: if you have created macros for general use, there will be a file named Personal.xls; you can leave that as it is.

Thank you both. Do you know where this file might have come from? Thanks again

It is a log file of the Java 1.4.1 VM, a browser plugin if I'm not mistaken. I have no idea how the log file ended up in your xlstart folder.
