Should a shared central template be READ ONLY ? (2k SR1)

    Hi,

If we share a centrally stored template of styles, should this DOT file have the "Read Only" attribute?

I am asking this as Word often seems to pop-up the message asking if we want to "Change" our template.
My fear is that users may make changes to the styles, or introduce their personal styles into this shared standard template.

    Pls. advise - Thanks,

    m.q.

You don't want ordinary users modifying a shared template, either intentionally or by accident. You could make the template file read-only, or you could have the network administrator set up security for the shared templates folder so that standard users have read-only access to this folder.

Make sure the styles in the template aren't set to auto-update. That's pretty much the only way I can think of that users could change the template from just editing their documents.
