Access other PC's on my network

    Hi All,

I ahve a simple question, I have a small network at home which I have had working very well on W98, 4 PC's and a Laptop. I have now upgraded 2 PC's and 1 Laptop to W2000, now my problems have started. Firstly I can only see 1 of the W2000 PC's on the W98 systems, on one W2000 PC I cannot see any of the other PC's at all. On the W98 PC I try to access the W2000 PC and get asked for a password, where is this defined, it is not the password used to access the W2000. I have also set the W2000 PC to be accessable via the network without passwords and it still asks me. Any help to my questions would be gratefilly received.

    Many thanks

    Mike

Just a couple of quick questions.
Did you upgrade over Win 98 or do a fresh install?
Are you using TCP/IP or another protocol?
Were / are the Win 2k machines now NTFS?
Just to get me some ideas.

    Hi Kent,

    To answer your questions.

These were new installs, I formated the discs and installed from scratch.
TCP/IP with DHCP from and ADSL Router, the PC's and Router are connected to a 3com 8 port hub.
No they are not using NTFS, well I think not.

    I hope that answers them.

    Regards

    Mike

Mike, this is a very, very, very common problem. Start <!post=here,214053>here<!/post> and <!post=here,214027>here<!/post> - and then post back with further questions.

Have you activated the "Guest" account on the ALL of the Win2K machines?

Have you shared the printers and or any drives and/or folders?

The default shares with a $ are hidden from the other computers and are for "Administrator" and machine use ONLY.

Are you user accounts of the "admin", "Super User" or "limited" group?

Re: Access other PC's on my network

    Hi Keely,

Thanks for the information, I have now enabled the Guest account on both w2000 PC's, one works fine now, it can be seen by the other 2 w98 pc, the second w2000 pc still has a problem. From any w98 pc I get the error (this is while using explorer) "the computer or share name could not be found, Make sure you typed it correctly, and try again". Now when I try to explore out of the w2000 pc that is not working, I cannot see any of the other pc's and get the error "List of servers for this group is currently not available".

Many thanks for all your help.

    Regards

    Mike

Also make sure each machine has a different computer name!

Re: Access other PC's on my network

I don't see anything odd off-hand. Now I can only get into anecdotal advice: my personal experience has been that when I've had a peer-to-peer network that included a w98/95 PC, I had to have the IPX and Netbui protocols enabled on ALL PCs. I can't explain why, but that's my story. Want to give that a shot? <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16> Anyone else?

Yes, you may need both IPX and Netbui protocols on all machines.

    Are the 2K machine NTFS?

You did NOT state if you DIFFERENT computer names and only one Workgroupe name?

You may also need the accounts "Mike Towns" and "Carol Towns" on both 2K machines.

It should look something like this. One of the items can't be shown because the item box is to small so I will scroll down snap another picture and post it next thread.
