C:\ (XP home)

The attached, I found in My C: My XP is installed on a new computer. The date of all of them, except the NTuser.dat, are from (I suppose) when XP was installed by the MFG. The date of the NTuser.dat is Jan. 16, 2003, created and modified. 1. What are they? 2. Can I delete them? I cannot open them to read them. I checked the properties to get the dates.
Thanks

I have no idea what IPH.PH is.

The other's should all be left alone.

I would first offer a caution, Victoria. Be very careful with WHAT you do with files you don't understand. If you "accidently," while opening a file, save it with for example a word processing program, you run the risk of "damaging" a binary file. You seem to be a person who thirsts for knowledge about the files on your computer and that's a noble cause. Just be very careful what you do with files you don't understand.

Now, as far as I can tell from the GRAPHIC representation you showed, those are ALL Windows system files that are required by the OS. I don't think space here permits, nor my knowledge (or lack of) of all the files allows description of what those files are all for. If you haven't already done so, you might want to consider a good book on Windows XP. Maybe Woody even has one

Re: C:\ (XP home)

Thanks guys. Just happened to see them there awhile ago and thought I would query them...not to worry, I don't open anything that I know nothing about. If I can't open it with "Explore", I don't. . I was just curious. Everything is running AOK (touch my wooden head) with them there, so I will just let them be.
Stuart - you said - "ntuser.dat is a registry file, I don't know why it is in the C: folder" - Should I worry about this being there or just leave it alone, or move it or what.
Al - I have the Windows XP 9 books in 1 of Woody's and also Windows XP Annoyances by O'Reilly another good reference book. Just got them from my husband for Christmas (what a great guy ). Only thing now is I have to find time to read them.

Good for you, Victoria! But sometimes I've found that the good books on something like a computer are meant to be initially "scan read" and then used from that point as reference documents. That's one of the reasons I always check the Table of Contents and Index of books I'm planning on buying. I want to be able to get a feel for how easy it will be to look something up in one of 'em when I need to. Good Luck!

Al
I do use them as mainly reference, but I also like to quickly read them. As you can see by my lack of computer knowledge, I suppose I should read them a little slower and learn how to retain.
wanna buy some old win95 or 98 books

Victoria,

Leave NTUSER.DAT there. That is where mine is on XPP.
