file sharing and passwords (Windows XP)

With Windows 98 I could share a particular folder on my computer by right clicking the folder, clicking sharing and setting the appropriate setting, including passwords, so that only people who had the password could see the files in my folder. In XP there doesn't seem to be a place to set a password for individual folder sharing. How do I set a password for individual folders in XP?

The answer depends on whether you've got Home or Pro, and whether networking is involved. If Home, it may not be good news because MS has simplified things for us.

In any case, open explorer, right click on a folder you want to share, select "Sharing and Security

I think the jist of it all is that with Windows XP (with some exceptions) USERS have passwords, not files and folders. Here's another reference you might find some help in.

Hi. I see your post is a few weeks old, but maybe you haven't yet found this MS KnowledgeBase article: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...b;en-us;Q307874. It seems to say that, under certain circumstances, you can get back to the features you want.

Re: file sharing and passwords (Windows XP)

I think my problem is the opposite. My 98 machine can access the XP Pro machine but not the other way round.

When I try to access the 98 machine, XP asks for the password for "Guest/nameofmachine" . I have tried all the passwords that are set up on the 98 machine from the network login to the share password and blank but none of them grant me access.
