Recent Documents (Word 2002/Windows XP)

I am not really sure if this is a Word problem or Windows problem. I have been noticing that any Word documents that are listed by clicking on start, documents - are showing the correct filename but when I click on one of them and pull it up, the filename changes to document 1 or document 2, etc. These files are the MRU's aren't they? I don't understand why it is only Word files that aren't keep the filenames. Excel, Access, files open correctly. Any clues?

Does this happen if Word is already open?

They are behaving as though they are template files (.dot) rather than document files (.doc). Any chance that they are, in fact, templates??

Does not seem to matter if Word is open or not. Still comes up as Document1, 2....... None of them are templates.

    Thanks for any help.

What options do you see in the menu when you right click on the documents?
    Which option is in Bold

    This helps.

New should be bold for a Template
Open should be bold for a document.

How sure are you that these are not templates?

Very sure - none of these are templates. I must have an option on in Word? I checked the other files such as the Excel files and open is bold.

If you are absolutely sure that these are not templates then the problem is in the Windows setup, not word.

    Can you try this...

Open Windows Explorer

Tools > Folder Options > File Types

Select DOC Microsoft Word Document

Click Advanced

If New is bold here then select Open and click Set Default

OK your way back to the desktop and see if that has fixed it[/list]StuartR
