Thanks for this notice, Al. I've been waiting, although I didn't see anything about an upgrade price...after all, they did abandon updates for the earlier version...not a good way to keep customers.

AdAware 6

(Edited by bigaldoc on 29-Jan-03 17:43. )
AdAware 6 is out, but may be swamped. I see they have the version as well as two "fee" versions.

Edited to add: I have a note out to the guy who told me he has tried it, to find out where he got it from. When I tried all their mirrors I got a javascript message that it won't be available until February.

Edit the edit: My friend evidently went right for the PRO version, unlike what most of us would prefer to do.

Re: AdAware 6

You are right , Phil.
No mention of upgrade availability OR price.
For the benefit of other Loungers who haven't checked the site. Price is $39.95(US) for the Pro $26.95 (US) for the Plus.
Free version, as Al mentioned "beginning of February"
They are really going out of their way to keep customers aren't they?

According to one of Lavasoft's Forum Admins:

"All existing Ad-aware Plus customers will be provided with an FREE upgrade to Ad-aware Plus 6."

Thank you, Bryan. You'd think they would post it on their site, but it's good to know.

Re: AdAware 6

I was a raving fan (still am, sort of) of AdAware until there was no updated dat file for a long time. Just wanted to mention that SpyBot Search and Destroy does a pretty magnificent job as well, and found a few things that AdAware did not.

Re: AdAware 6

I can't recall whether I bought the Plus version or have the free version. I don't know if it's because it's been so long or I'm just forgetful. I have 5.83. Do you recall whether the free & paid version numbers were different?

Same number, but the difference was the 'Plus'. Current version is 6.0 and there is now a current link and other mirrors at <post#=221501>post 221501</post#>.

Re: AdAware 6

The version of adaware6 is now available for download. I got a copy and will see how it is.
There are a number of mirror sites to download from and it's only 1.45MB.
Now I hope they support it properly.

Re: AdAware 6

Test of AdAware 6.0.
I first ran V5.83 and did not get any hits. (as expected, since I ran it a while back) Then Un-Installed 5.83 and refupdate completely. Installed V6.0.
After adjusting the settings to my liking, I ran V6 with a complete test. I picked up TWO things that 5.83 did NOT.
Observations:
1-V6.0 seemed to run a little slower than the older version. Although it did scan both HD's in just under 4 minutes, which isn't bad for an initial scan.
2-It looks in compressed files AND also checks your favorites list for known sites that have had AD implants. ( That's where it picked up the two hits on my system).
3-It eliminated the progress bar on V6. something I would like to have kept.
4-Updates are now handled direct from within AdAware instead of refupdate. (good)
5-More extensive customizing available and a good help file available.

That's the preliminary report for now. I will do more extensive probing later, but for now, I think that it is a good worthwhile upgrade.
Go for it

Re: AdAware 6

I decided, since I've been using the free version of 5.x for so long, to spring for the "big bucks" and order the Pro version, even though I intend NOT to run the Ad-Watch thing for awhile. The version 6 user interface takes a little getting used to, but it ran pretty quickly on my system of several partitions. As usual, it found some "objectionable" cookies which I allowed it to remove. I too like the integrated dataset updating and it did that pretty nicely for me. All-in-all, for only one pass, I was pretty satisfied. Afterward, I ran SpyBot S&D as has been my habit, and this time, the only thing it came up with was my ol' friend CDILLA, the TurboTax activation program which I now know shouldn't be removed. To its credit, the new AdAware evidently trusts CDILLA, since it didn't even mention it.

Re: AdAware 6

Hi, Doc ~

Thanks to the personal suggestion of a buddy, I installed the Plus version last night. I didn't like the AdAwatch feature initially, but I gave it a chance and what I liked about it was it told me in real time when an attempt was made of a 'drive-by' download by Xupiter and another similar browser hijacker and gave me the option to block it right then and there. Normally, I would find this after browsing sessions running Spybot or Adaware.
