    Import Outlook 97 files to Outlook 2000 (2000 SR-1 (9.0.0.3821))

(sorry if this is a dupe...i searched...)
Is there a way to import my Outlook 97 .pst and .pab into Out.look 2000? My wife says I have to use OL97 (which I don't have installed anywhere anymore....argh) and "export" them.

Do you already have Outlook 2000 up and running? If so, use File > Open > Personal Folder Files to add your old Outlook 97 PST file to your "Folder list" (if you don't see a Folder list on the left side of the Inbox, choose Folder list from the View menu). You can drag and drop or just keep the old stuff where it is.

The old PAB can be accessed directly in Corporate/Workgroup Mode (Tools > Services > Add). If you are using Internet Mail Only mode, you can use Outlook 2000's File > Import option (sometimes you need the Office 2000 CD to install this feature) to import the PAB records into your Contacts folder as Contacts. I personally prefer using the PAB because e-mail addresses are more intelligible (e.g., I can use Name (Company) instead of Name (E-mail)), but I've been told over and over to get with the program because PAB is the past and I'm already running late for the future. <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

Re: Import Outlook 97 files to Outlook 2000 (2000

Thanks for the tips. I was able to open up my Outlook 97 .pst file from within Outlook 2002. Now, even after closing OL2K, i cannot make a copy of the 97.pst file (for backup purposes). I get a message that another process has locked a portion of the file. How do I get Outlook 2002 to "close" this file, if indeed that is where the file lock is coming from?

When I try to import the .PAB file, I reoeatedly get a MAPI error. You mention that you prefer using the PAB, but I wasn't sure what you prefered it to. I think OL2K keeps addresses in the single .PST file, which somehow displays the info differently...?

Regarding the file closing, sometimes it's just a matter of time (1-2 minutes). If it remains open after that, I really can't explain it, unless you've accessed your Outlook address book from Word, or some other application. In that case, parts of Outlook may stay active (but no visible on the Task Bar) until the other application is done with them.

Well, let me first say I know little to nothing about Outlook 2002; I can only speak about Outlook 2000. In Outlook 2000 configured for Corporate/Workgroup mode, you can add a PAB Service along with your other services (Tools|Services...). You also can import the contents of your PAB into your Contacts folder. What MAPI error are you getting?? (Yes, Outlook 2000 is partial to the Contacts folder and wants you to use that as your address book.)
