Fonts for PC and Mac (Win 98 Sr1 Mac OS 9.2)

I need to create Word documents from PCs and Macs. I know these two handle fonts differently. I need the docs to be identical since they will be printed from the same printer.
I know Adobe has these OpenType fonts which are supposed to be compatible with both platforms.
Has anyone tried them? Does it really work? Are they a pain to install? Can I use them to produce Word docs? Will I still be able to see and use the other fonts I have?

    So many questions.
    Thanks

Why not use TrueType fonts? Have you found that they don't match?

True type fonts look very similar but the same document will print differently depending on which platform it is printed from. The doc in Arial on the PC will be 1 page while the doc in arial on the Mac will spill over the next page. The Open Type fonts where the one solution I could find. Any other suggestions?

My guess, and this is only a guess, is that this difference is caused by the printer drivers. As far as I know, the metrics of TrueType fonts are supposed to be the same between Windows and Mac. Maybe it would be possible to test this theory by setting both printer drivers to send the print job as a bitmap?

What versions of Word are you using on each system?

Remeber that these to progarms Word 2001 for Windows and Word 2001for the Mac are about the same, but different. Each were released about 2 years apart. I think they have just released a new version for the Mac that is simular to Word 2002.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
