Home Networking - Writing to Hosted CD-RW Drive (XP, SP1)

Is it possible, or how is it possible, on a home network to write files from a remote computer (laptop) to a CD-RW drive on another system (desktop)? I have tried dragging files to the remote desktop system but I get the error shown in the attachment. I installed Sony's CD Extreme but it does not seem recognize remote CD drives.

    Thanks,
    Al

All of the instructions I have seen on CD burners state, "Do NOT use accross a network". The slow network speed and or stalls would leave blank spots on the CD.

I believe you will find that you can share a CD as Read but NOT as Write.

To copy to a CD, I copy the files I want, to the machine that has the CD burner and then burn from there.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Thanks. Since I was watching TV downstairs and didn't feel like going upstairs to pull the files from my laptop, I pushed them to the appropriate "CD Burning" folder. Later I went to the desktop system and wrote them to the desktop's local CD. Work fine.

One caveat - I have not tried pushing same-name updated files using the same method to determine if XP will recognize that it's being asked to replace existing files on the CD.

I also have a Linksys-powered network - a combination of wired and wireless. Given that you've put together a "more difficult" network, i.e., W98 + XP, my XP-XP network should, in theory, work more easily. After reading Dave's warnings, I decided to put this on the back burner and just do what I wrote earlier. While it involves an extra step, it's certainly guaranteed to work. Thanks.
