Windows\system 32?

Can anyone tell me if a home computer running Windows 2000NT on broadband 24/7 cable connection, should be using over a MB every few minutes to ping the server? I colleague who recently connected to broadband told me that his firewall logged his Windowssystem 32 as the culprit. I have no clue to this question as I am not a home cable user. So I throw it over to you folks out there in cyberspace. The reason for his question is related to the additional charges he is getting as his connection is going over the MB limit.

Sounds to me like he has some application/trojan/virus 'phoning home'. Has he run a virus scan? Has he run AdAware or SpyBot? Is he running a firewall such as ZoneAlram that he could figure out which program or process is the culprit?

Hi Joe, Thanks for answering, yes he is using Outpost, the reading was:-
Undefined Rule SERVICES.EXE DNS Outbound 335 bytes Inbound 124 bytes = Total 456
This is happening every 2 minutes when the computer is not in use, only connnected 24/7 to cable. At that rate it is easy to see how the MB's are mounting up over a very short period. Does this help at all?

HI Cyberdance, Glad to try to help. Here's a quote from KB article 263201 - DHCP & DNS are among the many service involved. There have been many hotfixes for various problems with services.exe What's the service pack level of Win2k? Is there anything suspicious in the event logs? Here's a link to some info if you want to do more investiogation: http://www.labmice.net/articles/standardexe.htm. Could be a configuration setting for DHCP renewal or some sort of heartbeat.

Cyberdance,

Just found this: http://is-it-true.org/nt/nt2000/registry/rtips36.shtml. Be very careful about changing the DNS settings.
