    Ghastly Line! (2k SR1)

    Hi,

Word autodraws a line when you input 3 dashes and press Enter.
A double-line if you put equals.

Quite nice really, until sometimes when you have to delete it.
Causes big problems if placed even many lines after a numbered list.

The screen shot shows this ghastly line - pls. advise me how I can kill it?

    Thanks,

    m.q.

    Go to Tools>Autocorrect Options...
On the "Autoformat As You Type" tab deselect the option for "Border Lines" from the "Apply As You Type" section

The above was from Word XP but Word 2k should be very similar if not identical.

To remove the line after Word has inserted it for you...

Move your cursor to the paragraph immediately above the line
    Format > Borders and Shading
    Apply to > Paragraph
    None
    OK

If you don't want to disable the autoformat function entirely, simply hit the Undo button or Ctrl-Z once immediately upon it's appearance. You'll be transported back to the three underlines. If you've added any keystrokes after the line appears, you may have to undo a few more steps, but it's still a pretty quick fix.

And last, but not least, you can place the cursor anywhere in the paragraph above the line, as Stuart has said. Then click the arrow on the borders button on the Formatting toolbar & choose the shape that has no border. I think we've now collectively hit on all the methods. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
