New MSKB article (WIn XP Home-Pro)

This is an actual MSKB article (812492, I won't even make it clickable) pertaining to both Xp Home & Pro and most other OS's too! Just released. Just in time.

SYMPTOMS
When you start your computer, you may receive the following error message:

Non-system disk or disk error Replace and strike any key when ready
CAUSE
This issue may occur if you leave a non-system disk in the floppy disk drive.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, remove the non-system disk from the floppy disk drive, and then restart your computer.

DUH. So that's why I was having trouble booting !

That ranks right up there with: If you don't have any power or see any lights come on:

Make sure the AC cord is plugged in to an active outlet! (and the power switch is on)

There has to be some person making about $80,000 to $90,000 a year that writes these for all of us unskilled in the technical side of computing.

Yes it does, but you would NOT believe how often this happens. Some of the KB are kinda dumb to some of us, but to others they would never thought of this being a problem. As we more and more need to go to MS sites or the likes of it for help, all bases need to be covered.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Unfortunately, Dave, I DO believe how often this happens. What really amazes me is that it DOES happen at all. BASIC logic and reasoning dictates how problems are resolved. The first rule is never overlook the simple or easy things. Always look for the 5 cent solution, then go for the 5 dollar ones. But, I guess, not everyone is aware or cares about that.

Well let me perfectly honest. There was a time when I was stupid enough about Computers that those simple little things did make a difference for me. They may be a little silly to me now , but they wasn't back then. But then again, I was just a Biker that worked in Construction and a computer was a machine for geeks. Now I am a Biker who owns a Construction Company and a Computer. And I beat people up for using the word computer geek in my presence. Even slapped myself a couple times.

Non-system disk or disk error Replace and strike any key when ready

Where is the 'any' key?

What is wrong with 'Non-system disk or disk error Replace and strike any one of the keys when ready

The problem with either of the above statements, there are keys when hit will NOT allow the computer to proceed.

Re: New MSKB article (WIn XP Home-Pro)

This would have been more amusing 5 or 10 years ago. These days, I'd consider that to be perfectly reasonable advice (although if you're having that problem you'll have difficulty getting to MSKB to see the solution ). It wouldn't surprise me in the least if a great many novice (or even not so novice) users these days have no idea that you can boot off of a floppy (and if they don't know that, it's not likely to dawn on them that leaving a floppy in the drive is problematic). What non-system disk?! It wants me to replace my hard drive?!

How about "....strike a key when ready"

That should work (Ooh look - a key with an a on it! Let's strike it)

I still prefer "tap" to "strike" or "hit". The violent option is often tempting, and may even make you feel better. Until you have to fork out for a new keyboard.

But you know what, we DO receive Help Desk calls about the error "NTLDR is missing"...

People will forget about their floppies! And I know it takes a special kind of person to cope with the range of calls to help desks for any length of time. I helped set up a help desk when PCs first came out (except we called it End User Support back then). Often the tricky bit is to figure out what the problem is, rather than finding the solution.
