Autocorrect Word 95 to 2000 (2000)

We are upgrading our office from Word 95 version 7 to Word 2000......

For the life of me I cannot get the autocorrect files to convert. Please if there is any help I would appreciate it.

I'll try to get you a copy of "Macros8.dot", which is installed by default by Word97. I can't guarantee that it'll work with your version of Word. If you know someone that has Word97, see if you can get the "Macros8.dot" file.

The file I offered (Macros8.dot) is too large (572K) for this forum. Sorry!

Re: Autocorrect Word 95 to 2000 (2000)

Is there an error message? How are you trying to convert them? If you temporarily rename your new .acl file and replace it with your old .acl file and fire up Word again, does it work or croak?

These two Microsoft article provide hints, but not direct answers:
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 153148 - WD: How to Convert Word 6.x AutoCorrect Entries to Word 7.0 And 97
Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 153149 - WD95: How to Move AutoCorrect Entries Between Computers

(Note that macros8.dot probably won't help you; Word 97 used VBA while Word 95 used WordBasic. If you could use VBA, you might prefer the AutoCorrect import/export macros here: How can I import and export all my AutoCorrect entries, so they can be transferred to another machine? by Dave Rado at MVPs.org.)

If you need a Word 95 macro, I might be able to write one at home on Word 6, but I haven't used that computer for two years, so who knows?

Update: I looked at a WordBasic book (Word 6) and I cannot find any way to query the AutoCorrect entries collection. Therefore, file substitution with a more recent version of Word might be the only way to get at those entries.

Re: Autocorrect Word 95 to 2000 (2000)

I believe it is all because of WordBasic versus visual basic.

I tried replacing the current MSO1033.acl file by renaming the older version user000.acl file. But what happened is if you open up Autocorrect under tools....... if you look in the replace and with columns.... they are all wrong.

The macros I've seen must all be VBA - I wish I could attach an older version .acl file.

Thanks anyway. <img src=/S/brickwall.gif border=0 alt=brickwall width=25 height=15>

If you open up the old ACL file in WordPad, can you figure out the format? Maybe it could be imported as a text file?

The KB article you cited (153148) shows how to convert the ACL file.
Seems rather complicated, but I didn't understand why you said it "provide[s] hints, but not direct answers"?

I guess I can't be sure it works for 7 (95) to 9 (2000); it describes 6 to 7 (95) and 6 to 8 (97), but not 7 to 8 or 7 to 9. Certainly I'd give it a try and see what happens.

<img src=/S/blush.gif border=0 alt=blush width=15 height=15> missed the point... Sorry!

It's weird.

You'd think if the file formats of 7 (95) and 8/9/10 (97/2000/2002) ACL files were different, there'd be some KB article on it.
On the other hand, since just renaming the ACL file and copying it into the proper location didn't work, it looks like they *are* different.

See - that is the problem - Nothing deals with 7 to 9. <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>
