CD playing too fast, Windows media player, Win XP (Win XP SP1)

I have just installed a sound card and Win XP onto a new PC that came with a CD drive. The CD's replay at 2 (or 3) times correct speed. As of yet I can find no setting concerning replay speed.
Is this a bug? Is there a setting somewhere? Do some CD drives not support music CD's?

All CD drives have to support audio CDs.

First, check your settings. Open My Computer (or Windows Explorer) and from Tools menu choose Folder Options. Click File Types tab and click "CDA - CD Audio Track" from the list. Click Advanced button. Click (highlight) Play action and click Edit button. In the box "Application used to perform action" must be the entry like this:
"C:Program FilesWindows Media Playerwmplayer.exe" /Play "%L"
Checkbox "Use DDE" must be checked, in Application box must be the word wmplayer, and in Topic box must be the word System.

Second, check your CD drive. If you have another CD drive (from old computer, from your friend etc.) just connect it temporarily and see are CDs playing correct. If you have an old computer without CD drive, connect your CD drive to that computer and check audio CDs. If it is not the case, try to contact your computer's tech support (you described it as "new" - I presume it has some warranty) for advice.

Thanks, I'll give that a try.

I had tried to put an old CD drive in place but the cables didn't match (blocked peg on cable)

Andy--
I am looking at WMP 9, and your new install would of course have come with WMP 8, unless you updated to 9, but I believe this feature is in common to both and may have some impact. On the View Menu, point to enhancements>play speed settings, and move the slider to slow or fast. See if that will help. This is from the WMP Help: "To maintain audeo and video fidelity while playing content slower or faster, select play speeds between .5 and 2.0. This feature, known as time expansion and compression, is only supported for files with extensions .wma, .wmv, .wm, .mp3, or .asf. It may not be available when playing streaming or progressively downloaded media. To select speeds betwen the play speed marks, clear the Snap Slider to Common Speeds check box."

You should find this in your WMP Help index using "play speed" as your search term. If you have 8 hopefully it'll be there in the View menu; if not I'd go to 9. It's working well, has some good features, video is definitely better.

I have checked everything and it is how you said it should be but it still plays at higher speed.
However I have modified the device settings (in media player, CD drive) that it replays as analogue instead of digital and now it plays correctly.

I've since found a way to get it to play properly. I'll have a look at this as well, thanks for the response
