    Delay sound

    I am seeking a tag or script that will delay a background sound until an image loads.

    Ideally, a variable delaying the sound until the image(s) load locally would be preferred, but a fixed value that might, for example, be an arbitrarily optimal average of dial-up vs. BB speed loads would be acceptable as well.

    Re: Delay sound

    I know there is a method of pre-loading graphics for when they are used in mouseover events, but I don't know if that would help.

    A delay can be introduced using tags:
    <BGSOUND SRC="*.wav" DELAY=10>
    <SOUND SRC="*.wav" DELAY=10>
    <embed SRC="*.wav" DELAY=10>

    and I believe using:
    <META HTTP-EQUIV="refresh"; CONTENT="10; URL=*.wav">

    More info here - beware the annoying cursor trail - search the page for *.wav

    Thank you, Leif. <img src=/S/hello.gif border=0 alt=hello width=25 height=29> I will post back on how it works out.

    Late thought - you couldn't use a very simple (unanimated) Flash . . . .?

    Re: Delay sound

    That is actually a pretty good idea, Leif, and the file would still be small, but thought it easier just to tag or script the delay since the page is pretty much completed.

    I would agree with Leif - Flash was my first thought. Beyond the code to display the flash object, you wouldn't need any further scripting. The default treatment of Flash is to wait until the entire movie is downloaded before starting to play.

    Hope this helps

    Thanks Mark and Leif.

    You both are certainly right. I must sheepishly admit I still have not mastered such a basic compilation in Flash yet.

    Second late thought....

    ...and there are many who still have not overcome such a basic fear as letting scripts run in their browser!
    (Let alone have downloaded Flash to view it in the first place!)

    Re: Delay sound

    Hi, Leif ~

    I tried the suggestions:
    <BGSOUND SRC="*.wav" DELAY=10>
    <SOUND SRC="*.wav" DELAY=10>
    <embed SRC="*.wav" DELAY=10>

    but they did not delay the sound. I even tried different values from 15-1000 with and without parentheticals, but no luck. <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>

    Re: Delay sound

    Hmm. I tried them too without success.

    Do you have any audio editing software?
    How about adding 10 seconds of silence in front of what ever sound you want to play...

    No editing software. I have wanted to, but when it comes to manipulating sound, I am a complete ignoramus. <IMG SRC=http://www.krymow.com/images/_party.gif>

    Re: Delay sound

    Hi, All ~

    I am pretty sure I made a post pre-Search arrest, but am not able to locate it. Nonetheless, I had inquired about playing multiple sounds consecutively and wished to post a recent find for others who may be interested.

    For the sake of brevity, I'm simply posting the code used after the <body> tags that I have used successfully for 2 consecutively played sounds:

    <pre><BGSOUND id=SoundByte1 balance=0 src="http://www.krymow.com/sounds/sound1.wav"
    volume=0 loop=3 width="1" height="1">
    <BGSOUND id=SoundByte2 balance=0 src="http://www.krymow.com/sounds/sound2.wav"
    volume=0 width="1" height="1"></pre>
