    outlook express re-appears after updates

We use Eudora, not outlook express. Everytime I remove outlook express from the desktop, progams folder, Quitck launch the apply yet another IE patch, they re-appear after the patch.
How do I stop this behavior?

If you do not use Outlook Express, uninstall it (Start | Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs | Add or Remove Windows Components).

What version of Windows are you running? If you are running XP SP-1 or Win2k SP-3 you can use the 'Set programs access and defaults' to have a different program (i.e. Eudora) as the default e-mail program. That should remove access to OE. If you visist newsgroups OE is handy to have around. You can limit OE usage to newsgroups by adding the /outnews option to the target line in the OE shortcut.

    Cowboy,
No. After applying XP Sp-1 there should be any entry on the start menu called 'Set Program Access and Defaults'. This should also be a button on the left side of the Add/Remove Programs control panel applet. That's supposed to be where you can set this stuff permanently (at least M$ says so).

Should that be on both Home and Pro? No such beast appears on my XP SP1 Home. <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

OK, any ideas why it's missing, and how to make it appear? <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

I've dug around with Google, and in the MSKB, to no avail. Found lots of help to hide 'Set Program Access and Defaults'. Also discovered that SP1A is now out, but not needed if you have SP1 (and that: Note On the Microsoft Web site, "Service Pack 1" may be used in some cases to refer to either SP1 or SP1a.)

From msinfo the OS Name is "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition", and the Version is "5.1.2600 Build 2600" and Windows Update says no updates are available. I believe the "first" SP1 was build 1206 (or so).

    Tim,
AFAIK, it should be there as it was part of the DOJ settlement in the US. Maybe they did not put it in versions outside the US. I don't have ready access to an XHP machine to check it. Did you apply SP-1 or was it on the machine? When I right click My Computer and select Properties on my XPP machines they all have 'Service pack 1' under the version. BTW, the only difference between SP1 & SP1a is the MS JVM is missing from SP1a.

    Tim,
The version on my machines is also 2002. I don't know if a slipstreamed SP-1 will have 'Service Pack1' on the properties. I'll check be able to check an XPH machine that has SP-1 applied this weekend. If you have the time, you could download the network version of SP-1 and try to apply. If you do you'd have to re-apply any pre-SP2 fixes.

Re: outlook express re-appears after updates

Joe, thanks for your offer to check a Home SP1 for comparison. I expect it will have 'SPAaD' available. What I've found out so far indicates the only way to not have it, after SP1, is to do a registry hack. (BTW my registry didn't have any of the keys mentioned in the hacks, so I added them, with the values set to show 'SPAaD'. No luck, even after a reboot, so I removed them again)

I'm unlikely to have time to d/l and try the network SP1 you suggested, and I'm on dialup so keep my downloads to essentials only. Also, I'm reluctant to try a fix, unless I know how or why it will work. This problem is annoying and a concern, but non-critical (so far). I'm almost more curious to discover the cause, than a cure, because it could unearth other issues that might be lurking around.

<P ID="edit" class=small>(Edited by TimOz on 13-Feb-03 13:07. Added countries)</P>MSKB specifically mentioned two localized foreign language versions,Portuguese & Finnish (no, don't use t on my PC despite the flag), where the option was left out due to some translation conflict, so presumably it should be in others.

My machine was built in December, and came with SP1 installed. The vendor assures me that they did a "standard" install. But, the My Computer version on mine comes up with only "Version 2002" - no mention of Service Pack 1? The install CD did not include the Java VM (I had to d/l from Sun because the MS version wasn't available for d/l then). The CD does include SPNOTES.HTM dated 29-08-02, with the heading "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Windows XP Professional, and Windows XP 64-Bit Edition for the Integrated Service Pack 1 (SPNotes.htm)".

Add/remove programs lists a bunch of "Windows XP Hotfix (SP1)", and (SP2)!, entries, starting with Q309521, and ending at Q329115. And as I said, Windows Update thinks my system is OK.

    Where to from here?

Re: outlook express re-appears after updates

Tim, If the vendor installed an integrated Sp-1 version I don't think there should be any mention of any SP-1 fixes in the add/remove applet. The only one I have are SP-2 fixes. Have you checked any dates on files in c:windowssystem32? My orginal XP files have Aug 21, 2001. The Sp-1 files have Aug 29, 2002. Is the CD an official MS CD?

Re: outlook express re-appears after updates

Joe, now you've got me worried! 90% of the files in the system32 folder are dated 18 aug 2001, while the files on the supplied CD are dated 29 aug 2002.

The CD appears genuine, with all the holograms etc. The online activation went without a hitch, too.

<img src=/S/thinks.gif border=0 alt=thinks width=15 height=15> Is it possible for the vendor to have cloned the OS from a less than perfect master, rather than installed from the CD I received? If so, I wonder how they managed to get the build # to 2600? I've got this horrible feeling that I've got a major rebuild coming up, and no time for it. <img src=/S/groan.gif border=0 alt=groan width=16 height=15>

    Tim,
A suprisingly small number of my files are dated 29 Aug 2002. I'm sure it is possible they've got a bad master. A reload might be in order.
