    Fillin fields and Autonew macro

I am developing a simple letter template which uses Fillin fields to collect stuff like the address etc. An Autonew macro, which simply contains a ctrl-end command "fires" the fillin fields when a document is created from the template. With earlier versions of Word prior to 97, it was necessary to record a ctrl-a, then F9 to fire the fillin fields, but newer versions (I am working in 2000) seem not to require this last step.

However, upon creating a new document based on my template, some of the Fillin fields "fire" a second time. Why? And how do I stop it?

    TIA

Could you post a sample document demonstrating the problem?

The following knowledge base articles may help:
<A target="_blank" HREF=http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q238/9/78.ASP>WD2000: Two Prompts When Inserting AutoText Entry with ASK or FILLIN Field</A> and
    <A target="_blank" HREF=http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q164/5/47.asp>WD97: Fillin Field Prompts Twice</A>

You may want to download the letterhead system from
    <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.addbalance.com/word/download/index.htm#LetterheadSystem>my download page</A> (www.addbalance.com/word/download/)

This may not be the best way to set up letterhead, but it is a way that works for me. It consists of modular components so that changes to a letterhead are reflected in all form documents created from then on while documents that were created earlier remain unchanged.

For more on fields you may want to check out the links at:
    <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.addbalance.com/word/wordwebresources.htm#Fields>Word Web Resources - Fields</A> (http://www.addbalance.com/word/wordw...ces.htm#Fields).

    Hope this helps.

I'm trying to learn what the problem was.

Could you tell us how they helped?

Re: Fillin fields and Autonew macro

It seems that Word (bizarrely!) will activate Fillin fields when a document is created based on a template other than normal.dot, without use of an AutoNew macro. So I just don't use the AutoNew macro now.

    Hi Phil,

I'm glad you have your solution.

One curiosity though, when I read your original post last night I thought that you had already ruled out the AutoNew macro:

<<With earlier versions of Word prior to 97, it was necessary to record a ctrl-a, then F9 to fire the fillin fields, but newer versions (I am working in 2000) seem not to require this last step.>>

I take it you were still using the AutoNew macro? Isn
