Draw Table (Word97/SR2)

    Evening:

Am trying to figure out how to use the Draw Table feature in a column(s) of a multi-colum table. I want to put a line above the bolded figures (the 5th set of figures, in case bolding didn

Click in the number above which you want a line and call up the Borders and Shading dialog. On the lower right, change the drop down from Cell (or Table) to Paragraph. Now, whatever setting you make applies only to the paragraph with the bolded numbers. Doing this in a table cell is a hassle (lots of extra clicks), but you could record a macro if you need to do this over and over.

Thanks, but when I do that, the numbers are enclosed in a box!

I clicked 'custom' and then the top border & Grid and top border: got enclosed figures both times.

Any other way around this, do you think?

    Border a Paragraph Inside a Table Cell(Word97/SR2)

Well, I did leave a little bit of that to improvisation. Let me give you the complete recipe.

"Bordering A Paragraph Inside a Table Cell"
    1.
Click in the text you want to border. You can, in theory, select it, but inside a table cell, this is harder than you need to make it.

Use Format > Borders and Shading to call up the dialog.

Change the Apply to drop-down from Table (or Cell) to Paragraph.

Clear the suggested borders by clicking the picture next to None.

Add a line over the paragraph by clicking the button for a top border. If you want to change any attributes of the top border, do that before clicking the button to apply it.

Click OK to apply the change and dismiss the dialog.

Slice thickly and consume with gusto. I mean, witness the addition of a top border to the paragraph in which your insertion point happily flashes.
This diagram illustrates the steps. I should add, this was tested in Word 2000. I hope Word 97 is at least as functional.

    Jefferson -

GustO it is!!!! That's great and your attachment made it greater-er.

One final question: is it possible to get the line to extend to the borders? Mine came out just short and I noticed in the attachment that was true in your example as well. Changing the column size didn't help.

I am MOST grateful for your wonderful help.

Re: Border a Paragraph Inside a Table Cell(Word97/SR2)

This might do the trick (hopefully):

    1.
Click the table.

On the Table menu, click Table Properties, and then click the Table tab.

Click Options.

Under Default cell margins, enter the new values you want.
Note You can also change the margins in an individual cell. Click the cell. In the Table Properties dialog box (Table menu, Table Properties command), click the Cell tab, and then click Options. Clear the Same as the whole table check box, and then enter the new margin values.

Thank you, Alan, for the suggestions. I'm using Word97 so that might be why I don't get the desired results: changing the cell margins does not make the line reach the borders.

Appreciate the reply, though, very much.

Ah, silly me . I missed the 97 version, which I couldn't have helped with off-the-cuff anyway (using 2000 here). I see Hans directed you to the 97 equivalent though. Glad you solved it!
