    IE Favorites Management (1)

I want to manage Favorites lists from several sources. The Favorites list contains multiple sub-folders (taxonomy). I want to compare two lists and update one list. Off-the-shelf offerings do not do the job.

An Access program would work if I could get to information in the Favorite entry such as change date or URL. Suggestions and recommendations are welcomed.

    Baydave--

One tool to help you manage your Favorites is Favorites Home Page, though it might not have some of the functionality/features you want. It allows you to operate them as a web page going through your favorites and organizing them as HTML links with hyperlinks whose mouseover will give you their url's and you can make an infinite number of lists with Ctrl +N or opening new window from IE's toolbar (File>New) . It also creates a desktop icon--I find the ability to see all my favorites in this format a timesaver. Read Me for FHP.

IE will export favorites to an HTML file, you then could use a good text compare to generate a comparison. I don't know how it handles subfolders...

That sounds challenging. I have a method that allows you to combine and compare all of the entries, but I don't know a simple way to convert it back to your Favorites folder...

Karen has a nice tool called "Directory Printer" -- available at www.karenware.com. You can use this tool to "print' you entire Favorites folder to a text file. You can do this on several computers, then combine all the text files into one by simply cutting and pasting. Next, open the file in Excel and you can then use Excel's sorting tool to sort by link name and then date. Before you sort, you might want to add a column stating from which computer the Favorites link came.

That gives you a spreadsheet list of all the Favorites, tells you which one is newer and tells you where it came from. BUT... I don't know how you could then revert this back to being a folder structure. I suspect that will have to be done by hand...

Another tool that might interest you is "FavCleaner". This simply runs through all your Favorites and verifies that the address is still functional.

    Hi Rick:
Have you ever used AM-Deadlink? I'm wondering if you knew how it compares with FavCleaner. P.S. You've got a lot of neat tools. <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

It sounds very similar. I like FavCleaner because the guy bothered to make an IE toolbar button for it as well!

    Rick--
Favcleaner says for up to IE 5.5 but your're running it on IE6 or IE 6 SP1?

It works fine on IE6sp1. The differences between IE5 and IE6 are not great enough to interfere with most add-ons that I have tried.

    Thanks, Rick. One more utility to try then. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
