    Thinkpad POST error message

My mother-in-law has switched on her Thinkpad and got some sort of error/warning while the thing goes through its POST. I can't be more specific at this stage as I'm 250 miles away form the laptop but the crucial bit is something about 'save to disk feature is disabled Run PH disk for information'.

Only if she hits ESC (despite being told to hit any key to continue) does the message go away. The boot process then continues as normal, Win ME appears and does all it is suppose to do.

As far as I can make out 'PH disk' is some sort of IBM specific utility, I'm guessing it is related to FDISK.

    Re: Thinkpad POST error message

    Hi Stuck,

PHDisk is used to create a Hibernation environment whereby the current system state can be saved to a specially-created partition or file on the hard drive to speed up the 'wake up' when the machine is next used. I've found this about it, which points to the memory as a possible area to investigate. Has the memory recently been upgraded? I guess there's a possibility a SODIMM has passed away, hence the POST msg. AFAIK ThinkPads have a certain amount of RAM on the main system board, with the option to add an extra stick into a bus under the keyboard or from underneath the unit. A faulty memory SODIMM wouldn't necessarily prevent Windows from booting and may give the impression that everything was working normally.

I'll post back, should anything else come to mind...
    HTH.

Brilliant! <img src=/S/bravo.gif border=0 alt=bravo width=16 height=30> How did you find that info on the IBM site? I spent ages rummaging around there without getting close. Once again the Lounge is tops! <img src=/S/clapping.gif border=0 alt=clapping width=19 height=23>

This sounds like a prime suspect as nothing has been added.

    Tchah, it was nothing <img src=/S/blush.gif border=0 alt=blush width=15 height=15>

Removing the space between 'PH' and 'disk' when Googling helped though.
