    IE Shortcut Icons

If I, using drag&drop, make a shortcut to a web page, it often has its own (comoany) icon, whcih displays...

But, if I back up my files, nd re-install Win98, then restore the files, the icon has changed to the generic page icon... Then, if I re-visit the page, and re-drop a shortcut, the icon returns...

Is there any way to amke special icons that come from&with a website "stick" once you've set them?

    Regards,
    Chuck Billow

You probably need a little prog called Favicon - check this thread. A general search in the Lounge for Favicon may throw up more tips if needed....

    Leif:

That seems like it's going to do the job... thanks...

Now, if there were only a way to "lock" the icons!

It depends on what you mean. My icons have been locked for years...

Well, it seems that it is goign to take a bit of fiddling even with favicon to 'restore' the given icons... but then Windows seems to want to re-set again... so then you have to go through all the tweaking again?

    Re: IE Shortcut Icons

Hmmm... if FavOrg does not hold the settings, then I have to recommend highly against the use of that product. However, it is my understanding that FavOrg does permanently store the icons, therefore, once it is set correctly, the icons are 'locked'.

Personally, I don't use FavOrg but many satisfied customers do. Instead, I manually set each icon -- as it states in the thread linked above. Once the icons are set manually, they do not change. Windows has not ever wanted to re-set them in several years -- so I suspect it 'never' will.

YES, if you did not save the icons yourself or by using FavOrg, then you will have to go about restoring the icons to their previous glory. I don't believe FavOrg goes out a scavenges up all your missing favicons -- but I could be wrong.
