Which IE does she have? (IE 6 or 5.5?)

My friend has a problem that I can't solve. She's using Windows ME and not sure which version of IE she has.

Add/Remove doesn't list IE therfore she can't repair or install a previous version.
Help on IE says she has 5.5
Windows Update won't let her upgrade to 6, it says that it's already been installed successfully.

She had installed v6 awhile ago, but it's changed somehow. I need someone smarter than I am to help her.
I'm not using Windows ME and I never heard of such conflicting information.

I'd really like some help with this one.

    Duchess-

I feel your pain. There have been some confusing glitches with downloads of IE6 SP1 and OLE SP1 in that the download begins sometimes, and then it says someone already has a version. It would be great if MS would explicitly label the version of IE as well as put the number to several decimal places, and a number of people at MS have seen this come up who monitor their IE newsgroups. It has been suggested to them to label clearly, and to set up a way to confirm by typing a command in the run box, the way you can do with Win XP by typing "winver" in the run box, as well as to read the version at the System Properties box. Here's how to nail it, and clear it up for your friend:

164539 How to Determine Which Version of Internet Explorer is Installed. This table will allow you and your friend to match the number at Help>About Internet Explorer with the exact version. With this table, it will not matter which Windows OS your friend is using with the actual version of Internet Explorer.

Also, one definite you can count on is that if you have downloaded Windows XP SP1, you have downloaded Internet Explorer SP1 with it no exceptions, and confirmation is buried in a couple KB's.

Than you for the link. She and I both now know what version is installed. Now we need to know why she can't update to the next highest level IE6.

She hasn't updated to any SP level, just plan old 5.5 (thanks to you know).

This does not compute. I have never heard of a program spontaneously reverting itself to a lower version. If she installed version 6 at some point, then she likely HAS version 6 -- and her registry has recorded that information. If the registry believes she has version 6, then Windows Update will believe it. If the "About" box is wrong, then we can change the About box.

How exactly are you verifying the version? I would look at the version numbers and dates on the executable (iexplore.exe) and some of the primary DLL's

    What I find is this:

    iexplore.exe, browselc.dll, browseui.dll, and inetcplc.dll are all listed as version 6.00.2800.1106 and Created Thursday, August 29, 2002.

    R2--
She's verifying the version with the table in the KB I put up 164539 How to Determine Which Version of Internet Explorer is Installed. I sure agree it makes no sense at all that versions spontaneously revert or are impacted by anything other than a deliberate change to a version, or an uninstall via the KB's that outline it of a version of IE.
If the table number to several decimals actually confirms that it is IE 5.5 Gloria's friend has (regardless of the history), could you go from IE5.5 to IE6SP1 directly at this download site IE6 SP1 without first upgrading the 5.5 to 6.0?

In other words, does the IE6 SP1 download include all of the IE6 files? I was thinking if you could, that would be a go around for the message Gloria's friend is getting when trying to upgrade the 5.5 to 6.0.

Thanks for jumping in. I don't know what is causing the IE6 download to balk, or if she would be OK downloading IE6SP1.

Surely you are jesting! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> If you look at that article it lists multiple ways to verify this. For example:

    ---------------------

To determine the version of Internet Explorer that is currently installed on your computer, use any of the following methods:

Determine the Version of Internet Explorer By Using the User Interface

In all versions of Internet Explorer, click About Internet Explorer on the Help menu. The product and version information is displayed in the dialog box that appears.

Determine the Version of Internet Explorer By Using the Registry

You can determine the version of Internet Explorer that you are running by viewing the following registry key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftInternet Explorer

If a "Version" value appears in this key, Internet Explorer 4.0 or later is installed. The "Version" string value contains the version of Internet Explorer 4.0 or later that is installed on your computer (for example, the Version string value for Internet Explorer 5 is "5.00.2014.0216").

Determine the Version of Internet Explorer By Using the Shdocvw.dll File

For Internet Explorer 3.0 and later, the browser is implemented in the Shdocvw.dll (Shell Document Object and Control Library) file. You can use the version of the Shdocvw.dll file to determine the version of Internet Explorer that is installed on your computer. To do so, follow these steps...

    --------------------------

So I will RE-ASK my question... WHICH method is she using to verify the version?? <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Also, humorously, my version of Shdocvw.dll is 6.00.2800.1133. You will note that Microsoft sort of forgot to include that number on its list:

    6.00.2600.0000 Internet Explorer 6
6.00.2800.1106 Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (Windows XP SP1)
    6.00.3663.0000 Internet Explorer 6 SP1 for Microsoft Windows Server 2003 RC1
    6.00.3718.0000 Internet Explorer 6 SP1 for Microsoft Windows Server 2003 RC2

So using THAT file as a guide to your version of IE does NOT seem to be a very good choice... Oops. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
I would use the files I listed above.

Re: Which IE does she have? (IE 6 or 5.5?)

R2--I take your points. But I can't look at her friend's machine and if she in fact has 5.5 I know Help>About is the first place to look on Windows applications.
But take my IE6 SP1- or yours. At Help>About -it doesn't say SP1 anywhere except to lable the OS Win XP. What it says is : IE Version 6.0 2800.1106--not exactly the most intuitive set of numbers. It would help if it said point blank IE6 SP1 instead of 2800.1106. That's why I steered Gloria to the KB. If 5.5 says 5.5 at Help>About, well and good--I haven't had 5.5 for around 2 years so I don't know what it says. Your points on the reg keys and the dll file are good ones, but not every user is going to reflexly jump to the registry or dlls.

The best way to convey what someone has IMHO for MS is to keep it simple and label it so it's easily recognized.

But if Gloria's friend has 5.5, then why can't she download 6.0, and again if it's balking at installing that, would it be OK for her to just download IE6.0 SP1--does it include all of IE6's files? I'm not sure. I was just looking for her to get the latest upgrade or SP--then she can add today's update from Microsoft:
Feb 5 Security Update for Internet Explorer. Another day, another IE hotfix.

Re: Which IE does she have? (IE 6 or 5.5?)

Actually, mine does say SP1 in the spot MS has chosen to always stick the SP1 data. But I realize XP may not do this...

My guess is that the Help | About box is simply WRONG -- but it is very difficult to tell exactly WHAT is going on. She states the user upgraded to verions 6 yet she has version 5.5. Obviously, something is fishy here...

You cannot always trust the Help | About box. If the version of her "iexplore.exe" file is 6.0 2800.1106, then Help | About is simply incorrect. Without looking at the file versions, I don't believe we can know for sure what version she really has...

Re: Which IE does she have? (IE 6 or 5.5?)

Oh, lookie here. I just upgraded my browser to version 7.0. I'll bet I'm the first person on my block with that version. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Clearly, I can make the Help | About box display any number I want -- but that does not matter. The version of the executable and the primary DLL's REALLY determine what version of IE that you have.

Re: Which IE does she have? (IE 6 or 5.5?)

    R2--
I have the SP1 designation as well--it didn't say IESP1 so I thought it referred to XP--but it is Help About for IE. Mine doesn't list two of the KB's--one 313829 is for 2000 and NT; the other 328970 I tried to install and get a box that says I have to have IESP1 installed first--and I do; m ine reads the same as yours in that respect. I can't find the Nov update on Add/remove. If I try to install IE SP1 which the Help /About says I have and I know I do because I installed Win XP SP1 which includes it automatically, I get that I already have a "newer version".

I've read about these kinds of glitches for a while. 328970 is the Nov. 2002 cumulative update for IE. Do you know why that would happen? I have SP1 confirmed the same version as yours. And I would like to see a screen shot of Gloria's friend's Help/About so we could know for sure which version we are dealing with.

Re: Which IE does she have? (IE 6 or 5.5?)

You're not the only one, who's never heard of something like that. Yet, I've found stranger things happening when you're using Windows. Since, in my opinion, there's nothing better out there, I'm stuck with Windows and will have to keep trying to fix things that Windows seems to mess up without half trying.

We verified her version by consulting a couple of KB articles, I was referred to by a poster on this very lounge. The article numbers are 164539 and 165871 and we have determined that her version is 5.5.

I will contact her and ask about checking the files you suggest and post her reply. Look for it sometimes after 4PM this afternoon. I'm trying hard to convince her to join this lounge and ask for assistance for herself. She's resisting doing this and I have no idea why. I imagine if you have someone to do things for you, then why bother to do them for yourself.

The problem with the "Q numbers" is that some of the updates are "cummulative" so you won't necessarily have all the numbers if you didn't install each one separately. As long as you install the most recent "cummulative" patch, then changes are good that you are up to date. The most recent patch came out yesterday -- Feb 5th.

Sorry to be picky, but that doesn't really tell me much. You can attempt to verify the version 3 ways:

    1) Help | About
    2) The registry
    3) The file versions

The ONLY, ONLY, ONLY one I trust is the file versions. The other two methods are NOT reliable -- I can make either of them tell a complete lie (as shown above).

Re: Which IE does she have? (IE 6 or 5.5?)

Gloria--I solved my problem because there was a month later cumulative update for IE which had what I needed and it went in fine. I also got an answer from Microsoft this morning that they know about these glitches, and have some work arounds in the various KB's--there are 2-3 KB's on problems getting in Security Updates. One of them seems like a decent possibility for your friend getting in IE6 regardless of which version she has.

I went searching for "cannot update IE," "cannot update IE 5.5"and came up with this 318949. I know this is not an exact fit to your problem, title-wise, presuming to have IE5.5 and trying to update to 6.0. But after reading several times, it appears that the steps here starting with #3 under resolution may get IE6 in for her--regardless of what she has.

R2's insisting you verify in the registry is because whatever you do to successfully fix the problem or get it in might depend on what IE version you have. I didn't know what R2 taught me--live and learn. But it's not the first time and won't be the last. Even though this was named to target getting in a Security Update, note that it paves the way to reinstall IE by executing or getting in the IE6 browser setup and I think it's worth a try the more I look at it. See what you think.

Re: Which IE does she have? (IE 6 or 5.5?)

Actually, I don't trust the registry in this instance. I want her to verify the version by looking at the files themselves. The registry is only a log book -- it is only as good as the data that got entered into it. By looking at the files you are going right to the horses mouth....
