Pictures turns in red X (Word 2002)

When I open a document that contains pictures and that was created in an earlier version of Word, some of the pictures may be displayed as a partial red X or an entire red X. Why?

I have no idea whether this will work for you. In situations like this, I have sometimes been able to repair things by toggling the Float over Text property of a picture (in the Format Picture dialog) - if it was off, turn it on and vice versa.

There can be a number of causes, as the red x merely means there's a problem. In the event that you need to go further than the solution by Hans, some causes & workarounds are discussed in this article.
    Cheers,
