SaveAll/CloseAll et al. (Word97/SR2)

By now we all now that holding down the Shift key while clicking on a menu modifies that menu, right? (Hold down the Shift key and click on File in Word97/SR2 and note items such as "Save All" and "CloseAll").

And we know that "Anything that can be done with the keyboard can be done with the mouse, and vice versa". (Well, almost; there are a few exceptions, such as the PrtScr key ...)

How, if at all, can I effect the SaveAll item from the File menu without resorting to the mouse?

I can't see any way to do it from the File Menu, but if you are really desperate then you could use...

    Alt-F11
    Control-G
    Documents.Save

Or you could use Tools > Customise to add SaveAll to your File menu

Stuart, I would have replied sooner, thanking you for this, but I couldn't see the monitor on account of the tears of laughter streaming from my eyes. Also my butt hurt, where I fell onto the floor as the chair tipped back. Lucky for me I don't use my hands that much ......

I am now dreaming up a slightly more sophisticated version that would have me key in a set of commands that would assign the chosen command to a shortcut key combination, building, of course, on your strengths .......

I assumed that you might have a problem like the dog was chewing the mouse and wouldn't give it back!

The mice ate the dog last year ......

    For bonus points:

I take it that your opinion would be that as far as keyboard-only goes, we are stuck with what Word Sales staff thought would be "good things to have" on the menu system. That is, all the commands are present in Word, but they aren't all immediately available through the keyboard & menu.

That suggests something, but I'm not sure what. The use of the Shift key with the mouse takes us to another plane(t). The SaveAll and CloseAll commands are but two of the commands NOT present on the regular Shiftless menu, but they are a tad more privileged than the rest, for they can be conjured up with the mouse/Shift combination.

    2. You can access any menu command by the right Alt followed by letter combinations (e.g. title case is Alt, OET).

Interesting! I've used the LEFT Alt key for years. I practically never use the RIGHt Alt key. This morning may well be the first time in my life ....

Why did you specify the Right-Alt? Don't both work?

Not to labour the point, I was none too clear in my initial post. I should have asked about obtaining the effect of Shift-Click on all commands, that is, I was interested not so much in ALL the commands, but those which had been brought into the circle of Shift-Click affiliates, of which I am most familiar with SaveAll and CloseAll.

    Indeed. A sticky-alt key. I didn't know we had such a beast.

I went exploring. For all my curiousity (and the welcomed responses), I now figure that on non-customised machines, ONLY SaveAll and CloseAll are singled out as residents of sometimes-never land.

Now I'm wondering why the Sales staff didn't just put them on the menu. What might have been involved in coding this weird Mouse-Shift combination, used by only two (useful!) commands?

I take it that your opinion would be that as far as keyboard-only goes, we are stuck with what Word Sales staff thought would be "good things to have" on the menu system.

    1. You can assign any (well almost any) of Word's commands to a shortcut key through Tools/Customize...
    2. You can access any menu command with the Alt button followed by the correct letter combinations (e.g. title case is Alt, OET).
    3. You can access a toolbar command by naming the command with the ampersand in front of the hotkey.
    4. You can assign a keyboard shortcut to any font, style, autotext entry, or symbol.
    5. And, of course, you can assign a keyboard shortcut to any procedures that you choose to run.

So you're pretty well off even if your dog ate your mouse. Of course, at some point you're back to remembering all those hotkeys that worked in WordPerfect for DOS.

Sorry. I've corrected the post. I didn't mean to say the right Alt key. I meant to say the Alt key followed by the right (meaning "correct") letter combinations.
