Check Email Automatically - Vulnerability (6.00.2600)

Somewhere in the distant past I remember being advised that it was best to retrieve email at irregular intervals and NOT to set any email program to check for mail at regular intervals because the process advertised your email password. I cannot seem to find this advice in any search engine searches I put together today.

Is this valid advice, or is it outdated weblore?

    Thanks,

Whenever you check mail, you are sending your password out. If someone has tapped your line, they'll get you sooner or later; interval is irrelevant. On the other hand, checking at long intervals (e.g., 15 minutes+) rather than at short intervals (e.g., 1 minute) reduces the likelihood that someone randomly grabbing a bucket of traffic will get yours; this is just a matter of statistics.
