Cells excluded when computing sum (Excel 97 SR-2)

A worksheet I have been using for months isn't calculating correctly now. When I enter a Sum formula and specify a range, not all of the cells within the range are being added. I thought maybe it was a formatting problem (i.e., maybe some of the cells had picked up text formatting and weren't reading as numbers), but reformatting all the cells to Number/General hasn't fixed it. I know this must be something really elementary but I am lost. A clue please? Sample is attached.

    Hi kay_serasera,
You do indeed have cells with numbers entered as text. Changing the formatting won't fix it. To see the cells affected, select the range C4:M21 and press the 'left alignment' toolbar button twice. A bunch of 'numbers' will now become right=aligned, showing that they are held as text.
Solution: Copy any empty cell (eg B3) and do Paste Special / Values / Add to the range C4:M21.

    Cheers

It looks like the values on row 10 'Chicken thighs, boned and skinned' are all text entries, not numbers.
Changing the formatting to number will not change the nature of the cell contents.

    Try re-editing the contents.
Or you could try copy the range and use paste special and use the multiply option, where the multiplier is 1.

    Hope it helps

This is another way. Select a column, then Text to Columns from the Data menu, then OK.
