    Skin (WinXP Pro)

I used Hot Bar once for the cool skin that changed the appearance at the top were the tool bar is on Internet explorer from Outlook Express.Of course I don't use them any more because of the Spyware. Is there a way to do this without Hot Bar and without changing the skins on everything else. When I used Hot Bar it only changed the above.

I have not tested this, but it looks like the answer: Internet Explorer Toolbar Wallpaper (Skin) c/o Bryde aka Morgane

Update: It works (see illustration with custom 120x120 pixel BMP in the designated folder). But it doesn't seem very exciting...

Unless I've misunderstood what you're after, TweakUI will do the trick. Select "Internet Explorer", and you can change the toolbar background bitmap for IE. You can also change the Explorer toolbar bitmap there if you want to.

    I guess the Explorer change is under IE, rather than Explorer, "by design" <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15> . (I just love winspeak, it lets you explain pretty much anything! <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

    Cowboy--
Bruce has pointed you to a good place that will let you make a lot of reversible changes in windows--at group policy editor ("snapin") which in some ways functions as a built-in registry tweaker. Also, and I believe these are spyware free, but you can always go to Spychecker before you download and put in the program (they keep a pretty extensive data base of spyware) to see if you're worried.

You can make many changes to IE besides the tweak UI's with a number of the tweak programs, and two I use for tweaking IE are IE Personalizer by Access Codes and XTeq. They are <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15>. Both work well and are quick and easy to use--tweak many IE features, the thumper, name bar, ect. and Access makes an OE tweaker.

I don't worry too much about Spyware running Ad Aware, and Spybot which seems to get some things my free Adaware misses that the premiums might not with one exception--the file shares like Limewire, KazaA because their spyware is often poorly written with bugs that can corrupt your dll's or registry entries and really harm your OS or browser or put up annoying windows you can't knock down with Task Manager that are often symptoms for big trouble ahead.

This is built into XP Pro - a part of the OS. There is nothing to download and certainly no need to.

    Hi, Cowboydawg ~

Don't bother with 'Internet Explorer Toolbar Wallpaper' or any other unnecessary IE skin apps. I certainly mean no disrespect to Jefferson, but like he said, it is not very exciting and it is basically garbage.

<IMG SRC=http://www.krymow.com/images/starshine.gif> BUT... you are in luck! Built right into the OS of XP Pro you already have, you can change your IE tooolbar skin (as well as a few other nifty things) right through the XP Pro-only Group Policy Editor <img src=/S/exclamation.gif border=0 alt=exclamation width=15 height=15> Do this:
<UL><LI>Open the Group Policy Editor by 'Start' > 'Run' > then enter 'gpedit.msc'.
<LI>Click 'User Configuration' > 'Windows Settings' > 'Internet Explorer Maintenance' > 'Browser User Interface'.
<LI>In the right-hand pane, double-click 'Browser Toolbar Customizations'.
<LI>In the small window that opens, put the radio button in 'Customize toolbar background bitmap' and then hit the 'Browse...' button to navigate your way to any '.bmp' file of your choice, then 'Apply' and 'OK' your way out and you will have the 'skin' of your desire![/list]If you have a '.gif' '.png', '.jpg' or other graphic you wish to use, simply open up <font color=blue>IrfanView</font color=blue> and convert it to a '.bmp' file.

    Re: Skin (WinXP Pro)

I understand the MMC and the Group Policy Editor are native to XP Pro and use them day in and day out,--they're quite useful and everyone should explore them and read their Help and Support, but these puppies will do a number of things to tweak and improve IE quickly that GPE won't touch, and would involve somewhat time consuming regedits if you could get them all done. I think it is great if you acquaint more people with the Windows components and functions that can be controlled or changed there.

Do you need to create a button? This is to create a custom button and you will have to have a program or a script to carry out a particular function when this button is created.

I thought it was a button that would allow you to access the panel that changes tha bitmap images instead of having to go to Start,Run & gpedit.msc.

    Hey, Cowboy ~

No, but in theory, you could do that if you wanted. The section I outlined above makes it very easy to skin your IE toolbar. The Browser User Interface through the Group Policy Editor in XP Pro also allows you to do a few other nice things that are clean, safe, simple, reversible and without having to download & install any other garbage.
