Drop-down menus: order of choices (Office XP Pro)

I do not like Office's method of changing the order of the items in a drop-down menu based upon frequency of usage. I want my menus to be alphabetical -- and to reamin that way. Is this possible?

    Two things worth a try:
In an Office application (e.g. Word) ; right_click on the toolbar > Customize > Options > and select "Always show full menu's"
    and
Right-click on the Taskbar > Properties > Start Menu > Customize > and DE-select "Use Customized Menus"

Most menus are not alphabetical, but you can drag and drop the items to rearrange the order. Open the Customize dialog, and you then can move menus and menu items around with your mouse. You don't need anything special to be happening with the dialog if you want the changes saved in your Normal.dot template. (If you want to customize only a specific template, it gets a bit trickier.) Make sure to save changes to Normal.dot if asked when you exit Word. In fact, you might want to exit Word immediately after making your changes, just to make sure it exits normally and doesn't crash.

Re: Drop-down menus: order of choices (Office XP Pro)

I have already done both those things. I think I wasn't very clear in my original question -- but since I've been messing with this, I realize what I really want is for the menu NOT to change based on usage. I just want the menus to always show all the choices -- and always in the same order (whatever that order is!).

I didn't really mean alphabetical -- I really meant to say I just want them to stay always the same. If I change the order of items on a menu, per your instructions, will the items move around based on my usage? Is there a way to turn off the "usage meter" or whatever it's called?

Apologies - I meant Personalized menu's not Customized menus from the Taskbar - see below.

I assume it's similar to Word 2000 (see picture).

Re: Drop-down menus: order of choices (Office XP Pro)

Unfortunately, in 2002 the choices on that screen are different -- Under personalized menus and toolbars, the checkbox choices are "show standard and formatting toolbars on two rows" "always show full menus" "reset my usage data" "large icons" "list font names in their font" "show screentips on toolbars" "show sortcut keys in screen tips." There is also a place to choose the menu animations. That's all. (I'm sorry I don't know how to capture a picture of the dialog box.)

It seems they have decided that I should not be allowed the choice I want!

It's got to be always show full menus. After all, that's exactly what you want!

I've always had that checked. Apparently that just keeps all the choices visible (in whatever order!) -- instead of collapsing the ones I haven't used lately. But it doesn't mean they'll always be in the same order!

    Hi Wendell:
I haven't used Word 2002. You mean that even if you choose full menus, Word 2002 reorders them according to your use? More big brother. <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>

You are correct - Office XP got a bit too cute for my taste. But you can reset the menu back to it's default and reset usage data. That should at least temporarily fix things. Bear in mind that you can also customize the order of menu if you so choose - maybe that is part of the reason they changed things.

I know it shows/hides items based on useage, unless you turn that option off. But I have never seen it resort the menu items. Virus?

Re: Drop-down menus: order of choices (Office XP Pro)

    Hi Sheryl,
After running full menus for nearly two weeks, I don't see any reordering going on. In fact, I don't think I've seen it even with the recently used ones active either. You can customize your menu structures in applications, and it sounds like something has done that. If you have some add-ins installed you might want to check and see if they are responsible for your aggravation.

See if there is a pattern related to the template for the document you are editing. You can shuffle toolbars in templates, so I suppose you could shuffle menus, too. I have no idea how Word reconciles those kinds of conflicts; weird results seem very possible.
