    Arrange Icons

Help! In Windows 2000, when I try to arrange the files in a folder by date in list view, it arranges the files in date order with the newest file last, not first. This is not how Win98 works. I can switch to Details and rearrange the files so that they show up with the newest first, then switch to list view, but then the folders are all at the end of the list -- also not the way Win98 works. Does anyone know how to arrange files in list view so that the folders show first, then the files show with the newest files listed first? Thanks much.

Select the sort the second time and it should sort the other direction. Then if you do it again it will reverse the sort.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Dave,
I think he wants a view that when he sort descending by date he gets folders sorted by date followed by files sorted by date as he does when sort ascending by date.
However, I don't think he can do this.

    Hi, Joe ~

Unless it is different on W2K, isn't that excactly how they are always sorted?

    Edit: Nevermind - realized I was thinking A-Z rather than 1-9 <img src=/S/blush.gif border=0 alt=blush width=15 height=15>

    Re: Arrange Icons

    Hi Joe,
Yes, you're right. What I want to do is click Arrange Icons By Date and have the folders show first and then the files in descending date order (most recent first.) That's sure how it works in all other versions of Windows I've used. It's the handiest view because I can immediately see my folders and the files I've been using recently, all right there at the beginning. But since Arrange Icons By Date doesn't seem to work the same way in Windows 2000, is there some other way to accomplish what I want to do?

    Charlie,
You can do that with Outlook. It may not be the be way but if you have Outlook running most of the time it could solve your problem. I don't know of another tool off the top of my head but a quick google search would probably turn up some candidates.

    Hi Joe,
Well, you lost me there. Okay, here's the scene. I open My Documents from the desktop, and I want to see my folders and most recent files first. Is there some way to do that from inside Outlook? Or are you just talking about email? Thanks.

    Charlie,
Yes, there is a way within Oulook (at least 2000 & XP - not sure before that). Go to File | New | Outlook Bar Shortcut. Then you should have a drop down list for 'Look in'. Select 'File System'. The select the folder where you wish to start. That should add a shorcut to your Outlook bar that will allow you to navigate your file system from with Outlook. The 'date modified' sort should do what you want.

    Hi Joe,
You're brilliant! That works just great. Outlook gives me all kinds of options for sorting and displaying my files. I'll keep My Documents/Outlook minimized and available, and I'm all set.
    Thanks very much.

Another FYI, if you switch the 'view' in Windows Explorer to details, you can sort your files any which way you want.
