    Favorites

I'm about to start using a new Windows XP machine and would like to know if it's possible to transer my favorite folders from the Favorites on my old Windows 98 machine. Are there any Favorite files I can save and then re-install on the Window XP machine? Thanks.

    Re: Favorites

Internet Explorer favorites folder is a standard folder full of shortcuts. Just copy the entire folder to removable media (or a network drive) and restore it to the new system.

If you're not sure where the folders are on the old and new systems try a file search for Favorites (you may need to enable viewing of hidden files on the XP system)

    Re: Favorites

    Farmer,
XP has a utility to transfer ALL your old settings (e-mails, toolbar settings, window sizes & bookmarks or favorites) from your old system to your new XP system. You can transfer the data via serial connection or over a network, or copy it to a removable medium, like a CD, Zip or floppy disk.

To prepare the new computer for the file transfer:
    1. Go to Start / All Programs / Accessories / System Tools and click Files and Settings Transfer Wizard .
    2. When the wizard's Welcome screen appears click Next.
    3. On the Which computer is this? screen click New Computer and then click Next.
    4. On the Do you have a Windows XP CD? screen , click I will use the wizard from the Windows XP CD. and then click next.
    5. When the Now go to your old computer screen appears, go to your old computer <font color=red>Do Not Click NEXT At This Time</font color=red>

To copy data from your old computer:

    1. On your old computer insert the Windows XP Operating System CD and on the Welcome screen click Perform Additional Tasks
    2. Under What do you want to do?, click Transfer files and settings.
    3. When the wizard opens click Next and when it asksWhat computer is this?[b/] click Old computer and Next
    4. Select a transfer method choose items from What do you want to transfer? and click Next
After the information has been copied b[Completing Collection Phase
    screen appears. Click Finish

To transfer to the new computer:

    1. On the Now go to your old computer screen click Next
    2. On the Where are the files and settings screen select your transfer method and clickNext
The wizard will collect all the files and settings and transfer them. Whe all settings and files have been applied click Finish
    Now restart your computer.

Thank's for that reply DocWatson. Very comprehensive. I'll give it a go. As a matter of interest, where is the favorites folder located?

    Re: Favorites

On Win 98 it's a sub-folder of the Windows folder. (Except if you are using user profiles, in which case the favorites folder you want is the one in WindowsProfiles<your profile>Favorites)

    Re: Favorites

Thank's IanWilson. Ok, I'll copy the folders and then put them in my favourites folder in XP. This may be a bit simpler than the more comprehensive approach suggested by DocWatson.
