PC-Cillin

Those familiar with "me" here in The Lounge will get a kick out of this question, but after MANY years of use, my friends at McAfee have finally gotten to my limit with their Version 7 "bloat" and so I now ask a question. May I have some comments from users of PC-CILLIN concerning their opinions of the antivirus product and any problems encountered? I am a long-time objector to the same kind of bloat in the Symantec products, so I'm considering PC-Cillin as a new purchase, based on what I've been told by a couple of local people. But, I've read some things on the web about problems with Pop3 mail and such, that I solicit your comments. Remember The Lounge rules, please, no flaming or such, but your personal experiences would be nice to hear.

BigAl, Why don't you go with a free product like AVG, Avast, or Anti-Vir? I've used AVG and Avast. Many people run AVG. I had a problem with my system locking up running AVG & XP. It most likely was something else I did 'cause I've not seen anything in newsgroups about lockups. I'm currently using Avast from Alwil - seems to be fine.

I bought PC-Cillin (2002?) for my Dad's computer. It works smoothly, and I don't have to download those big McAfee files for him any more. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> I would say, though, that if you run the file scanning, and the POP mail scanning, and the built-in firewall, the memory footprint is serious.

We use Trend Micro products at the office (and the company is a client), so I trust the technology, but I also know that the documentation can be sketchy. It helps a lot if you understand the general principle of how various pieces of AV software work.

Re: PC-Cillin

Thanks for your comments, Jefferson. I don't intend to run the firewall, but I DO use email scanning (one of the reasons I DON'T use AVG!). I had read some things on the web about problems with the way PC-Cillin "proxies" itself into your Pop mail, but they seem to have fixed that. I installed it on a test-drive last night, while I wait for additional comments here. Sadly, for the FIRST time in 13 months of running XP Pro, I had a total system lockup that only a power-off would fix! I let PC-Cillin start a scan of all three drives on the machine and, (my fault) I never thought about the simple XP screensaver! When I returned to the machine later, it was locked up. I managed to get the screensaver to recede, but the machine was locked on the scanning window and task manager wouldn't open. I plan to try another scan AFTER disabling the screensaver, but THAT'S the kind of advice I'm looking for. As we speak, I don't see anything of concern in running processes. I can identify several elements of PC-Cillin, taking something on the order of 11-12 meg of memory, but no CPU. One of the reasons I got interested in this product is what seems to be called a smallish footprint, compared to Norton or McAfee. Don't like the initial price, but at least I see THEIR upgrade price is not so bad (for the future).

AVG does excellent e-mail scanning both incoming and outgoing and either with or without attachments.

Big Al
I don't understand. Are you saying that the email scanner in AVG doesn't work? I rely entirely on AVG and so far I have had no viruses. I also take all the precautions about attachments - but it's worrying if the virus scanner doesn't work.

Howdy Bruce and Peter

As quoted from Grisoft's website FAQ page:

"The AVG E-mail scanner does not support every E-mail client. Supported clients are MS Exchange, MS Outlook and Qualcomm Eudora which use the MAPI protocol. If you are using a different client be assured that you are fully protected by the AVG resident shield.

The number of supported E-mail clients is growing, so make sure that you get the latest update."

That last part, about the supported client list growing, hasn't changed for several months......it's growth must be stunted!! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

BigAl, and I, use Mozilla!!

Have a Great day!!!

Re: PC-Cillin

Howdy Al and others.

Methinks Grisoft might not be totally forthcoming with the capabilities of AVG.

My quote from their FAQ page, as posted above, was under the heading The E-mail scanner button is inactive.

I'm using AVG and The E-mail scanner button is active. All selections can be made. However, although I have selected "Certification" of both outgoing and incoming email, no such certification appears on the email......yes, I have a message entered. There is no message to let me know that my email program is not supported. I don't really want an email virus coming at me to find out if AVG is scanning my email.

It appears they have changed AVG to allow "The E-mail scanner button", indeed, the whole function, to appear to be functional when it, in fact, is NOT!!

Anyone have a different take on this?

Have a Great day!!!

Me again........

BTW, I'm posting about AVG in this thread because:
a) It's already been mentioned
If Al and I are wrong, and AVG ver 6 does support email scanning in Mozilla, then we both would likely be quite satisfied with AVG.

Re: PC-Cillin

Peter and Bruce, if you search for AVG here in The Lounge you'll (hopefully) find the earlier threads where it was discussed that AVG is very limited in its email scanning. If you're lucky enough to use one of the supported clients, way to go! Thanks for the reminders, Ken!

Now, back to the subject of PC-Cillin. I spoke too soon in my earlier post in reply to Jefferson. PC-Cillin did NOT set up my email client correctly and I've had to do some monkeying around. Fortunately, there's a writeup on their site about the "proxying" problem that helped me out somewhat. The product changes your email client settings as follows:

Where your client would normally have:

username
server name

PC-Cillin says it changes that to:

localhost
server name/username

In my case, it did NOT do that correctly in my primary email account (I have several). But when I changed it, according to instructions at their site, I could NOT check email at ANY of my accounts. Again fortunately, they say that you may need to add a few lines to their INI file and I did that and it fixed the problem. It's worth noting that the name and location of the INI file have changed in PC-Cillin 2003. The only email problem I'm left with is an account (cable) that requires SSL and port 995 (rather than 110). This account won't work and I've written Trend Micro about it. C'Mon Loungers. Add to my knowledge base.....

Re: PC-Cillin

Hi Phil

I just sent the Eicar virus test that you posted to myself.........No alarms, nothing, zip, nada....neither outbound, nor receiving.

I also ran a scan on my "Mozilla" program folder, where I believe my email message should be sitting (in both the "Sent" and "Inbox" files)....NO Alarms.

In line with my comments above concerning Grisoft being up front, the AVG run window clearly indicates that the "Email Scanner" is "Active and Functional". See attachment..

Have a Great day!!!

Re: PC-Cillin

Ken,

Did you save it with a .com extension?

If not, try it again with a .com extension. AVG should catch ot then. I know it did for me everytime I went near it.

Re: PC-Cillin

Hi Bryan

Sure enough!!!!!!

I tried sending the code with a ".com" extension as an attachment and AVG trapped it. I was able to send, and receive, the same as straight text within an email message, but I'm not sure that's pertinent.

AVG also trapped it when I tried to "open" it after saving it as a txt file.

Hey BigAl....are you following this...maybe Avg will work for us after all.

Now if AVG will maintain its service.......their last virus definition update was Jan. 28, a week and a half ago......their FAQ page still doesn't acknowledge that Mozilla, and probably Netscape email is supported.

Have a Great day!!!
