    Mirroring Hard Drives

I have an 8G hard drive that's pretty well full. I want to mirror it with a 20G, break the mirror, then take out the 8 and put in another 20, then mirror those two. My question is; do I have to partition the 20 hard drive to match the original 8 or can I partition it to 20G?
Thanks for any help you can offer

    Re: Mirroring Hard Drives

I used Drive Image to mirror a 10GB hard drive to a 30GB hard drive and my 30GB was partitioned for 30GB. I had no problems using Drive Image to do that and was able to boot right up to the 30GB hard drive with what I had mirrored from the 10GB hard drive.

I'm fairly certain it is handled for you under the Disk Management console - you need to start with another disk with at least the amount of unformatted (unpartitioned) free space you want to mirror. Check the Help file in DM - it should walk you through it....

If you are in Windows 2000 and up, just use Disk Management. Do not partition the 20 gig, just right click on the 8 gig partition, and select 'Add Mirror'. It will prompt you where you want the mirror added.

I did something similar a few months ago, to replace a hard drive on my server (a glorified desktop....hehehe), I just mirrored the OS drive, then broke the mirror and booted from the new copy.

    Don't you know it's bad luck to break a mirror? <img src=/S/drop.gif border=0 alt=drop width=23 height=23>

That could explain the nightmare I've been having lately with DSL providers! <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Gotta love computer lingo sometimes. Breaking a mirror is not as bad as inserting your floppy! <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>
