Word 2002 Template won't open in Word 2000 (Word 2002)

I developed a template for Word 2000 and moved it to Word 2002, where I have been working on it for several months.
Now it won't open any longer in Word 2000, simply telling me that "an error log is being generated". I tried removing
ALL the modules from the template, as well as all the References that it would let me remove, and I STILL can't open
it in Word 2000. I don't know where this "Error log" is, in case that would give me a clue. Otherwise, I don't know how
to track down this problem. Does anyone have any ideas?

Can you open it in Word 2000 if you hold the Shift key down?

I clicked on the .dot file name in the Templates folder with the Shift key held down, and that didn't do it.
If you meant holding down the Shift key and clicking the Word icon: no, that didn't help either.

I also tried deleting normal.dot and then opening Word. That didn't help.

I also tried opening my template in Word 2000 on two computers: one of them had both Office 2000 and Office XP installed.
The other one has only Office 2000 installed.

Can you use the Organiser to move all the contents of the dot into a new dot within Word 2000 (or maybe even in Word 2002)?

    Templates sometimes get corrupted.
Even greater chance when moving template back and forth 'tween different versions.

Export all the modules, classes and userforms from the Word 2002 template.
Create a clean Word 2002 template and import the exported critters into the clean template.

See if you can open the new template in Word 2000.

If not, another possibility is that one or more userforms has gotten corrupted.
Cleaning those up has to be looked at on a case by case basis, at worst recreating each userform.

Re: Word 2002 Template won't open in Word 2000 (Word 2002)

I CAN recreate the entire template from scratch, importing into a new template. And that may be what I'll have to do.
However, what is striking is that the template that won't open already
HAS HAD ALL OF ITS MODULES (AND USERFORMS) REMOVED. There's nothing left to it, and it STILL won't open!

I would like to hear from other VBA programmers who have moved templates between versions.
I keep discovering undocumented changes to Word from 2000 to 2002, not all of which give backward compatibility.
Who knows what strange new feature might be gumming up the transfer process.

Rather than kill yourself trying to resuscitate the troubled template, try creating a new template in Word 2002, and opening it in Word 2000. So far so good? Try adding each of the various parts to the new template and test them in Word 2000 until you either (1)find that it all works fine, or (2)discover which module or resource was the culprit. Let us know how far you get.
