    Hi gg,
I believe the answer is to be found via Files|Save As|Tools|General Options, where you get the choice of setting "Password to Open" and "Password to Modify", etc.
    Cheers

Open the file and choose Tools | Options and look under the Save tab for the Password to Open. Type something in there, confirm it and save the file.

To remove the password, go to the same place and delete it.

I wouldn't trust the crown jewels with this file protection though but it stops the honest people and the cheapskates from getting in.

If you mean "cannot be opened in Microsoft Word," the above solution is satisfactory. If you mean "cannot be pried open with anything," you will have to find other encryption solutions. Zip programs are an easy and widely available solution, but I've heard that the encryption is not strong.

One of the more popular alternatives is "PGP Freeware," which you can download here. (Earlier versions can be found at other sites, but apparently this is the only place you can download version 8.0) The license says "...for noncommercial/nongovernmental purposes only. Noncommercial/nongovernmental purposes include only the following activities: not-for-profit use by students at educational institutions, use by charitable institutions or organizations, or use by a home user for not-for-profit activities." So this might not be suited to your needs.

I'd bet you could find more suggestions on the Software Board here in the Lounge.
